Hey, all! As the title says, new track, by my band Parasite. Would appreciate if people would take a listen, give us some advice on what could be done better. I don't have the talent that a lot of the members here do, but would appreciate some feedback.



And for real, done with shitty comments with people just saying they don't like it. If you don't like it and have nothing constructive to say, move on. It's not difficult to do so.

awesome.
drums (snare) is not punchy enough. i'd use different snare. it's not cutting through the mix.
vocal is too polite. cant hear the bass.
this sound would make justice.

 

Agree to a certain extent w/ rhythm crit. Should be the mix focus. Kick is too weak and too repetitive. I feel like the song should start w/ chorus (strong enough) then go back to the "intro", maybe not immediate enough as is? Liked the (what sounded like) super rapid arps (0:13) maybe use that sound a bit moar / breakdown? Bit fatiguey. Maybe listen to some dnb and (more) early Aphex / Autechre for inspiration for drums? I guess I prefer breakbeats (snare spamming) to kick spamming :D

 

@korte1975 and @famouslut personally, I agree with you both on different aspects. The vocals are too polite, I know damn well that I can do a lot harsher than what's in the track. Snare, no, it doesn't cut through enough. It does need to be more upfront, for sure.

@famouslut I'm a demon for breakcore/breakbeats. A lot of the stuff that I listen to and program doesn't tend to end up in the final. I LOVE glitch! One of my go to artists is Igorrr. Absolutely love that!

It's only myself working on pretty much everything. There's me doing everything apart from guitar. I have a tendency to listen to things for hours over, then make myself soundblind. Yeah, there's a lot that I agree with both of you on.

I really appreciate both f yours suggestions. Thank you for that. I'm going to take a step back from this for a few days, then readdress it with those suggestions in mind.

 

@korte1975 totally getting what you mean about the snare drum with that Korn track. Something like that would definitely cut through a lot more. The one I'm using is too low end reliant.

 

Apart from the things that are already mentioned and with which I mostly agree, you over compressed the song and this results in a lack of punch.
If better mixed, you'll probably don't need a different snare.
I'd also lower the synth and separate it's freqs more from the guitars.

But on principle I like your way of making songs.

 

Hey @No Avenger Thanks for the comment/advice, and the compliment! I definitely need to learn more about when, where and how to use compression properly. Still toiling away, and no end to learning! Glad that here's people here with a wealth of information and advice. Definitely invaluable! I'll go back to the mix on this after I understand more about compression. I've pretty much learned on my, never watch tutorials, though I know damn well that I should. As for the synths, I've put loads of work into the e.q for them, but probably way too much. If I'm honest I did try to rush them because I was coming sound blind. Been a while since I've heard the track now, so it might be a good idea to go back and have a play.

Parasite-B, this isn't my genre, but I can hear passion. Here's my advice: put a small band together and play in some clubs, bars, roughen up that voice (it doesn't sound right for the genre, too clean-cut, young), see what works, what doesn't, toughen up a bit, learn from crowds, and actually see real reaction .. play for free at first if you have to, suport other bands, tell everyone you need the experience and you want to harden as a rock performer. Forget recordings for now, you're not ready. Perform first, harden up for this genre.

 

I am not expert, to me sounds great and also the voice is very "edible" not so "hard or screamy" wich I think the track can be listen by people out of this genre, about the music is really good increase the adrenaline. Thanks for share with us.

 

@Thankful I agree that my vocals are too clean on this track. I actually do a lot of screaming, but held back a fair bit on this one. I might go back and retake some parts, or put some backing vocals in there. Something to rough it up a little bit. But yeah, other tracks I do a fair bit of screaming/shouting, high and low. Used to play live quite a bit. Right now just getting some new songs together, then actually going to start looking for band members, and playing live again. Already in the works, buddy! @saoto thank you for your comment, too! It's strange how people can have difference on opinions, my vocals for example. I love that we're all different. It'd be a very boring world if we were all the same! "Edible" is not a word I've had used to describe my vocals before !I like it! :D Thank you very much for your comment, too!

 

Before I went into radio I learned a lot from gigging as a DJ in clubs. Imagine the sinking feeling when you start a song in a club and more than half the dancers walk off! LOL, you learn the hard way right? Or, you're saying something and no one is listening to you. You learn how to get people's attention. So it is with live music. You need to experience some situations that make you think, make you improve yourself. And there's no better place to learn if what you're doing is being well-received than live. I would recommend to any performer, recording artist, producer, do it live in front of real people, then you'll know what works and what doesn't. Best of luck.

@Thankful I have actually played a lot of live shows. I forgot to mention that. Thing is the way we write I don't really get a chance to practice the songs/lyrics. Haven't been in a practice room in years. Literally write the music, then the lyrics, then come up with the melody and way it's sung on the spot. Really should get back into practicing again, as it's not helping my voice get the workout it needs. Over the years we've gone from not very well received at all, to the crowd at least looking like they're having a good time. I know damn well what those bad sets feel like. It's pretty soul destroying to look out and see everyone's left. Hopefully we'll get back there again soon! But again, thank you very much, man. Best of luck to you and your endeavours!
