I really like Reason for its generators and FX, but for whatever 'reason', when I wanna get stuff done I'm always faster on Ableton.
Playing around with it can be fun, but the only rack device I'm using regularly is Dr. Octo Rex, with my library of all kinds of REX files on Korg Gadget (iPad). And yes, I'm one of the few sitting down and manually editing them in ReCycle from time to time.

It's never sounded ballsy to me. I bought it back at V1 and despite being vaguely intelligent I kept upgrading until 9.5, when it dawned on me how awful it is for my needs. I now use Logic whose instruments, loops and effects (without even factoring in 3rd party AU's) is so much better in every way. I do a lot of film score work and would rather drink from an unflushed toilet than attempt to create 100 plus tracks of music score, sfx and edited dialogue to a precise frame rate in Reason.

You can make Reason sound "ballsy" but you're right, there's hardly anything missing in Logic and for $200, it's hard to beat.
And movie score is a totally different story. I had modern music in mind :winker:

You would never use "anything" by Apple. Why?

the wurli sounds great.....the flanger i would love to have as vst....malström sounds recognizable...same as thor...thor sounds digital, cold, harsh, shrill _maybe not on youre material but on mine...
so much plain and poor dnb came from reason 4-6,5....dunno how it sounds today....reson itself sounds great but not the old synth

that you can control everything with everything was my reason + point in past too...but is it really worth it ? other DAW are similar when not as modular as reason/bitwig mayby

i kno you can be really effective with loop recording or hip hop producing in reason...

i would like to have malström and subtractor as vst, they are simple to work with and yet have this thin retro sound to it, i was never able to recreate with recent synth plugins out there.

otherwise i see nothing appealing in Reason, rather stick to my ableton, which has the best workflow for me.

it has the best expansions rack (if the main plugin or the paid one) it's for sure and if you able to sacrifice little bet of your workflow then reason is amazing daw.!
the sound quality of many expansions and effect top quality it was screaming analog .

Ableton I always hate the workflow the arrangement windows is so stupid , specifically the zoom arial
in Ableton only working with samplers
in my opinion it was the best daw for sample editing , but not as main workflow
    ( just in my opinion)

but still it's does matter which daw we are using.
but rather if we having fun and that's the most imported
and in reason case I find it !

Still got Reason 2.5 cuz it's kind of fun. Reason 3-5 had muddy mixer sound imo and I never got beyond that.

Could only guess that Serum put in Ableton sounds crispier than ported into Reason (?)

Yes vst implementation was a bit a joke, propellerhead was not intersted, why? this request was made by many users long time ago, fortunately, vst implementation was a free update

Get a wavetable (with scanning or morphing) synth and frequency shifter fx (the shift button in Malstrom, I think, I haven't used this synth for years - had v3 or something, it may have been doing something different).
(You also need the right waves for a starting point, of course.)
U-he Zebra can do these sounds I think, check the oscillator fx. Some of them use the same or similar technology, it's easy to replicate sounds from Malstrom with them.

Reason was the most efficiently coded thing in the past, I've heard that it's a CPU hog these days, that's sad.
    Pretty great software for laptops.
I'm not sure that Bitwig is modular (I've never used it); modular means being able to change modules and routing schemes, not being able to modulate everything (a feature that is in every modern modern DAW, I think)
Stuff like FL's patcher, Bidule, Max, Reason, Reaktor etc is modular.

In 2001 Reason was the coolest thing ever. But nowadays, I don't know…

Is the VST Support for real now or is it still using these lame Rack Extensions?

Reason 10.2 is really good and I use it for everything, I was a bit disappointed that you can't use VST's in rewire mode but that's a small price to pay for something that is so good in everything els 9/10!

Vst support is good, vst are integrated like others modules in reason, with a specific rack module, but it's the beginning i can't use sidechain with waves plugins, recently, i was not able to use, regroover essential, but with the 1.7.7 version i can, vst support in Reason was just born he need to grow
