    Brief rundown...

I've notice that whenever I go to install some plugins that the installer makes a Steinberg folder. As far as I know I have ZERO products from Steinberg. I install all my plugins in a dedicated vst folder. When I delete the folder, it comes back when I go to install something new. What is the reason for this? And how do I stop it?

    Cheers

It can be because VST is Steinberg's technology. And installer of VST plugins creates Steinberg's folder by default.

One of those folders that you have to delete later if that's not your dedicated VST plug-ins folder. Been that way for almost 20 years.

That Steinberg folder is one of those that I check occasionally and delete when it is empty.
I see it is there now, but empty, thank goodness. If there was something in it I'd know that I messed up choosing an path for VST!

Yeah, it's just rubbish. Delete the shit. Create a VST path in your Windblows registry HKLM/Software/VST [path] and make it C:\VSTPlugins or D:\Porn\Masturbation, whatever. At least some of the better programmed plugins will look for it and install there.

I find the installation procedure of many plugins just ridiculous. They install all over the place. It's freaking terrible. That's why I use VM to install them and then just transfer them to my real OS manually.

Hi man , you can modify to specify where you want your default vst installation folder.

Just modify the path in the registry here: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\VST\VSTPluginsPath

    Capture 08.PNG
Right clic on the: VSTPluginsPath and choose your default plugin path

Windows does NOT create a steinberg folder but if you install a plugins it might create a steinberg folder there are a few hmm maybe alot of plugins that do that but not all plugins some only create a Vst plugin folder.

So the only thing that creates ta Steinberg folder is the plugins INSTALLER not Windows itself.

Also there is NO vst folders = (there is two Vst folders one for x86 = 32 bit versions in the sysWOW64 folder and one for x64 versions) in the registry on a freshly installed Windows it is created after you installed your first vst plugin

Another point is that some installers also MESS up your default Vst path's and change it accordingly to where you install that plugins ToonTrack and som other companys is known for that.

So if you install say Ez-drummer plugin on (D:/bla bla/duh duh) your default vst folder is gonna be (D:/bla bla/duh duh) until you change it as shawn above (oh and remember to look for the Vst in the SysWOW64 folder aswell if you got 32 bit pluins installed) and almost all other plugins you install after that is most likely wants to install it to that dir.

However there is a few installers that don't do that and always wants to install your Vst,s to Program files no mattter what default Vst folder you got in the registry and some even FORCE you to install it to C:/Program Files and you have to manually move the dll file to the righ Vst dir otherwise the Daw want see it unless you say in the preference that it shall look for Vst in that dir.

Applied Acoustics does not only create a Steinberg folder it also spread their vst dll files all over the file tree structur i.e if you got NI products it will install a subfolder called Vst Plugins in the Program Files/Native Instrumments and put their dll files there and also in "common files" and a few other places really annoying if you ask me.
