    Hi, I've downloaded:

    - Synthline-RolandJV2080-Internal-PHOTONE and
    - Synthline-KorgZ1-Internal-PHOTONE

For both the main archive has the usual .BIN and .CUE files, but the iso seems corrupted since no program has managed to load them (Cdxtract, Extreme Sample Converter, and so on).
It's useless to re-download them because the RARs unpack with no errors, it seems like they are in a "strange" iso format (for instance, looking in a HEX editor their first 16 bytes are duplicated but in "legit" AKAI images this doesn't happen)... any help?

Like I said, the main RAR unpacks without errors, giving a BIN a CUE and a NFO file.
The problem lies in the BIN file which is not recognized as a proper AKAI image.

    Try this:

    1) Mount the CUE+BIN with a Virtual Drive utility, like Daemon Tools, on a Drive letter, e.g.: X:
    2) You will not be able to read/access the data in X: from Windows. Instead, open X: from within CDxtract

(I am typing this, trying to remember how I was doing this around year 2000 or so, so let me know if this works)

    Best wishes!

    >>> EDIT:

Step 2) may also be made from within Kontakt.

Akai Iso format cannot be read from the Windows File system. Nonetheless if the image was extracted without errors, you should be able to mount it with Daemon Tools or any other similar software. Once mounted Kontakt will be able to access the content of the Akai image.

Thank you guys, but I've already tried all of the above :( Daemon Tools does mount them but when I try to access the mounted image I get "invalid file system" from Cdxtract, Extreme Sample Converter and Translator. Since other AKAI images work perfectly, probably:

    - these PHOTONE releases are fake/corrupted from the beginning OR
    - the ISO are in a particular format that requires some sort of conversion

As I said, you should be able to mount the image from DT but there's no way to access it from NTFS which is perfectly normal.

Did you try to access the mounted image with Kontakt?

I wanted to give a try and reproduce your issue but I was unable to find the two releases you mentioned in your 1st post.

Well at least these are not on our sister site.

I know, I know: AKAI isos are on a custom file system that is not recognized by windows and need to be extracted through the utilities I mentioned above :)

Kontakt doesn't show in the FILE section the virtual CD on which the AKAI image is mounted.

The releases are not from the sister site, but if you google them exactly as I typed in the first post you should find them...

    "without errors"
that does not necessary exclude the unpacker as the problem

but looking at similar releases, yours is a somewhat common problem,
leading towards its not the packer.... but still there is a chance it is

found this thread on NI forum,
    maybe worth a shot
although you and others already mentioned some tools used there

Are you sure? I remember when I first did that, I missed it as well because the AKAI partition appeared *at the end of the file list*.
    Easy to overlook.

This is most likely the problem. In order to check if the issue is related to this specific image or something else at the OS level please proceed as follow:
    - Unmount the current Akai image
    - Mount a different image.
    - Is kontakt able to "see" this new image?
If yes then the issue is most likely related to this Akai Iso.
Otherwise the problem might be somewhere else at the OS level .

Which version of Kontakt by the way?

@TentacoloViola Maybe your mounting program is not working properly with Akai, or just these Akai images? I remember that some image mounting programs are not working with Akai format. You can mount them, but CDXtract or anything else can't read them. Have you tried WinCDEmu? I'm using it, and I use old freeware Daemon Tools, too. When I say old, I mean *old* [v3.47]. :) They both work for me with all kinds of images [Roland, E-MU, Yamaha, Akai]. I use old DT in XP and WinCDEmu in W7. I haven't tried these particular images you have a problem with, though.

Thanks for your answers. Kontakt (v5.6.6) does recognize other AKAI isos, and I've tried five different softwares to read/mount these images with no success, so I think I have to give up :)
RAR files have a CRC check, i can reasonably believe that the main archives are ok... but it's pretty strange that a group doesn't check their stuff before releasing it...

About 40% of that PHOTONE batch were bad rips. I'm not sure how they botched those, but they should have been nuked (or kept internal, ha).

    Kurzweil K2500
    Korg Trinity
    Korg Z1
    MAM MB33 MKII
    Novation SuperNova
    E-mu Proteus 1XR
    Access Virus
    Yamaha EX7
    Yamaha FS1R
    Roland D70
    Roland JV2080

... all need a proper rip which will probably never come. P2P releases are floating about for most part though.

Note that there are about 19 or 20 rips from that same series which do work, so it's not a methodology issue.

No. That's the point of this thread. It's not about being incompatible or the OP not knowing what he was doing, or didn't unpack it with the right utility, or that they're just "too old", or anything of the sort.

Those particular releases are improper. They are broken. They don't work, never did work, and never will work.

I don't mean to be harsh because I know everyone on here was trying to be helpful in troubleshooting, but there is no troubleshooting. Those particular releases were not tested and put out in a non-working state. That's the unfortunate answer.

That said, even though they really are bad rips, it's actually possible to fix them if you know what you're doing, so I guess I technically misspoke to a degree when I said, "never will work." But they're definitely non-working in their normal state. It shouldn't be necessary to go through this very unusual method to use an Akai CD, but... this is an entirely unique circumstance.

How? (Remember, not all PHOTONE releases are bad, so this should only be done on the invalid ones listed earlier in the thread)

Use WinBin2Iso to convert an original PHOTONE xyz.bin to xyz-fixed.bin. Yes, that's right--you're converting a bin to a bin instead of an ISO which is totally nonsensical, but do it anyway. WinBin2Iso lets you supply the output file name, so just change the *.iso to *.bin and choose convert.

Use WinBin2Iso again on xyz-fixed.bin and convert it to xyz.iso, just as you'd normally expect to use the program.

That's it. And yes, the ISO will be much smaller than the original bin/cue, but it is the correct method, nonetheless.
