    Yep, at least they should.

I once made a comparison between Lame and Fraunhofer codec and was convinced I could hear a difference at 320kbps. So the results of different converters may vary.

Please, keep in mind that there is an audible difference between 128 and 320kbps.

But if you're looking for a free conv, you could try

Conundrum: Doesn't all converter programs use the (hopefully latest/last) mp3 LAME/Fraunhofer codec? Hmm...

ALL DAWs have this. Even the latest Ableton Live (haha).

Every codec has its pros and cons: For example LAME has a better quality at higher bitrates (and even up to 640 kbit/s but not all players can handle those) than FFMPEG but it lacks quality at lower rates a bit. Actually AAC (e.g. FAAC) has a better quality than mp3 codecs and is said to be mp3's successor, despite it's still not as popular.
So I try to use AAC recently and use Bigasoft Total Video Converter which does both and I'm pretty happy with it.
Ultimately it comes down to what does the best job for your usecase.

    For Fraunhofer I use WaveLab.

I just converted one of my own mixes with Audacity and AVC to 320kbps mp3 and aac with highest resolution. mp3 was ~9MB, aac Audacity ~4MB and AVC ~3,5MB. In a blind test both aac versions sounded worse than the mp3.
The aac version with FreemakeAudioConverter couldn't be played!

DBpoweramp. Someone once posted a link that shows distortions of common converters. And dbpoweramp was among the few that passed the test.
