    Reaper template:
SD3-SSL-Kush.RPP (holds all settings listed below)

    Default location for Reaper templates
    c:\Users\{your user name}\AppData\Roaming\Reaper\ProjectTemplates\

This template was done on an older Dell N5010 laptop w/4 gig, m370 4 core,
internal sound card, Magix ASIO driver. My make it work or forget machine.

With an external audio device & newer, more powerful computer, performance should double.

To get an idea of what is going on, highlight tracks with plugins switching them on & off by hitting the power button for any highlighted track.

SD3 starts with an empty kit.
Select a kit and assign to multiple outs in the mixer.
Toms left out on purpose. Up to you. Which works best for you?
Drum Strip or stacked plugin chain?

    Plugins & presets/settings used:
Kush Omega N (intensity set pointing just past the N).

SSL Duende Native 5.1.1 saved & noted settings:
    SSL Drum Strip_Ambience.txt (manual settings)
    SSL Drum Strip_OH.txt (manual settings)
    X-Comp Kick.sslpreset
    X-Comp Snare.sslpreset
    X-EQ Kick.sslpreset
    X-EQ Snare.sslpreset
    X-Saturator Kick.preset
    X-Saturator Snare.preset
    X-ValveComp Kick.preset
    X-ValveComp Snare.preset

    Default location for SSL presets:
    c:\Program Files\Solid State Logic\Presets\

    SSL presets used for a real acoustic kick that started this idea;
    SSL Kush Presets

I appreciate the share of your template, but every project/song/instrument has its own sound to be dialed in. Maybe this will be nice starting point for less experienced users who want to learn some things in REAPER and SSL plugins.

You can adjust them? It like a recording console that has been prewired to the hardware, for a quick setup. You can also make your own templates that suit you. I have and they save a lot of time.

This a a template using Superior Drummer 3 inside of Reaper 5 with Kush & SSL plugins. You simply drop MIDI onto the SD3 main track or, pick a groove from the internal library & play. These are actually useful with acoustic drums as a starting point.

If you reset each plugin to default (factory) settings, you will still notice a tonal change.

As mentioned in the notes, I started this idea from an acoustic kick recording with 2 files. Kick & Kick Sub.
Each kick was processed & bussed together where final treatment was done with the SSL Drum Strip.

The song (rock/blues) was done in a live room. The trick was getting the kick to sit still inside all the bleed.

This led to the idea of trying it out with SD3 amongst the different factory & custom kits. As with all Toontrack kits, adjustment per kit is required. I always start with the internal kit piece levels, not the internal mixer.

Does that clear the fog for you?

Exactly. A starting point and, an example of what can be done using quality external plugins giving a more realistic sound as a result.

Using the SD3 factory setting, you always have the same starting point. Nice but not there yet.

thanks Quad..could i ask; what were you going for, what were you looking to achieve, especially soundwise, when you created this template please? this includes the question, what were you UNHAPPY with in the existing setup that you were using bfore this..i know thats a few questions.
this'd help me in sculpting and refining the sound to an even greater degree when using your chain.
