I just had quite the experience reformatting my cpu last night . It turned out for the better though it seems. My computer had more holes in it then swiss cheese. Apparently it was so checkmated that it wasn't able to update for years.. VPN was re-routed, I was shocked. after reformat the browsers and all looked so different I thought I downloaded Mohave by mistake. I had no idea mac's were open like that now. I was so overconfident with that false premise, no more community computers with roomies I guess.. now I'm paranoid to let anyone touch let alone the tech saavy of this forum. I come in peace

Glad you're fixing the problem, sorry the fix includes reformatting. Your roommates must've hit some pretty awful sites to get that infected! In my travels, I end up going to some pretty disreputable spots and have picked up a grand total of three pieces of malware over the years ... none of which actually affected my MBP's performance like yours did. And I think one of them was MacKeeper (who hasn't accidentally downloaded that goddamn thing a few times?). Is there anything you could install to keep infections down to the bare minimum? I had Norton for a few years, until I realized it was a CPU-choking scam.

What did you end up doing? I remember the olden days, where you could just do a clean install, then migrate all your files over. The last time I did anything like that, I used CCC to clone my drive, then wiped the original, did a complete reinstall and then piece-mealed my files over from the backup. These days ... I dunno. I had to reinstall my OS a few months back and the Sierra installer just wrote a new system over the old one without touching any of my files. That's good, if you mess up your OS somehow (like I did), but bad if you're trying to get rid of malware. I also tried out Malwarebytes for OS X -- not bad, and you only have to pay if you want ongoing 24/7 protection, instead of just the free ability to manually scan your drive every so often.
