Maybe I didn't notice in the posts before, but I have the impression no-one gave you the advice to take lessons in case you plan to learn how to play an instrument. You should really do this.

I absolutely love this topic <3

  5. There are hundreds of gigabytes of music theory and composition content on the net, between YouTube, the sister site, etc. But what drives me nuts is that like 99.9% of it is about making Western European-style music. And the 0.1% that isn't Euro tends to be high-level ethnomusicology and analysis which assumes that the reader/viewer is grounded in Euro music anyway and explains it from that perspective.

Can anybody recommend some music theory/composition 101 "for dummies" etc which starts from other musical styles, and deals with them in some systematic rigor? I don't mean a 5-10 minute YouTube video, I can easily find 100 "introductions". The difficulty is in finding material that goes deeper. Such stuff surely must exist. Where's the Udemy course on Yoruba drumming? Or the ADSR for Chinese opera?

No offense to Western Europeans! I like some music made that way, and I know that many people are heavily invested in those systems. But it seems practically inescapable. I am not even in Europe, but I hardly encounter anything else! Help!

  6. I did a "Yoruba Drumming Lesson" search and found endless videos about Yoruba and many other non-western styles. There is even a better way to learn drumming, and that is by actively searching for a teacher and taking lessons. Everywhere I have lived and as well have traveled has had a lively drum community that is welcoming to anyone who takes an interest in this, the earliest form of expreesing creativity. Just about any kind of music should have some pocket of musicians gathering, be it Chinese Opera enthusiasts or Tuva singers if the city is large enough. And where there are musicians there are going to be teachers. Living outside of metropolitan areas I guess that you need to rely on social networks. That of course can too be utilized within the larger cities. With so many people from everywhere everywhere, I say, here here to the diversity and the great opportunites in this day and age to learn just about anything anywhere as long as you have access to the internet and the ability to purchase, rent or borrow the instrument of your desire.

Buy a beat up six string in a secondhand store
You might not know how to play it, but you'll know for sure
That one guitar will feel good in your hands, won't take long to understand
Just one guitar, slung way down low
It's a one way ticket, only one way to go
You'll start rockin', ain't never gonna stop
Gotta keep on rockin', someday gonna make it to the top

    Advice based upon personal experience.

Enjoy house music and amateur DJing for a few years.

Download Ableton, 1000+ sample packs and every VST known to man.

Spend countless hours watching contradictory tutorials and making 4 bar loops until you lose the will to live.

Realise that trying to learn sound design/house music production is the most time consuming and soul destroying hobby ever as you can never achieve that quality sound you strive for.

Take a break for a while, get the bug again and then return to the endless cycle of tutorials, sample surfing and loop making.

    It’s great fun

All jokes aside, if we have to tell you "how to start" making music, then you're better off where you are now: listening to and enjoying music from the sidelines.

No, not really. I think OP is interested in different approaches to be most effective. He said he's already singing in a band, so he already makes music, even if in a different way.

Sorry, his original post made it sound like he was contemplating doing something, no actually doing it. This is why I should read the whole thread before inserting my two cents (or my foot in my mouth).

Was joking more about the pending deletion, I seem to be on an off topic role at the moment....
