My snide comment: A pop course trying to enlighten a pop blinded student body on the intricacies of being popular and the consequences of popularity in this modern day western pop culture. It brings to mind blind men and an elephant and foxes guarding hen houses. More to the point and probably much more impactful would be to watch Nosedive, an episode of Netfix's fantastic Black Mirror series. It would probably be much more informative as well as entertaining. Reflect.

Making connections between the psychological researches in its different fields and "the social or economical issues" and vice versa may seem principled and a bit effortless but how that psychology affects the popularity of particular forms of art among the masses in different times is so ambiguous for the people that don't have access to the authentic information like the ones eg. YouTube gathers.

Maybe we should ask YouTube to publicly publish its "likes or dislikes" as usually sells them to the government, entertainment industries, etc. for better decisions.

Exactly. We take a Casio Vl-1 and make three bald guys sing da-da-da here. While Americans make the whole science of it and still come up with da-da-da, just in a different way and with addition of some twerking arses and bouncing titties. That's why even US porn is just plain boring.

I can see how there would be a "psychology of popularity," in two regards: 1) bias toward someone deemed "popular" and against someone "unpopular," despite equivalent attributes of both or superior character or capabilities of the latter; 2) the imprinting of the effects of one's popluarity or unpopularity upon one's psyche, and how that forms one's expectations of the world, other people, and how one will fare in life – but also how those effects are "read" by others, who esteem one accordingly. In the first case, a total asshole with no redeeming qualities can be treated like royalty, whereas a morally-adjusted person who has a lot going for him/herself can be viewed as inevitably a loser or creep. in the second case, how one had been treated by one's parents and/or the other kids at school might leave an invisible, yet subconsciously-detectable, mark on a person, which others recognize and suggest to open or close doors of opportunity for that person.

This course scientifically talks about the different aspects of "the effects of popularity or unpopularity in young ages on the personal and social life of all people in the society in all ages".

But not about "how do some people become popular?" or "how is the popularity defined?" or "who makes something popular?" or "is popular stuff good at all?" and so on.

Music business without considering the latter questions due to its business nature won't be successful too much. Indie artists probably would have different views on this subject but business is business.
