So... I'm off to bed. And here's the result of tonight.
Hope you enjoy, and any comments, good or even better, are welcome :)

Some kind of downtempo, kind of dark trip-hop thingy.

Me likes it too. Could benefit from some harmonic progression, more cleaned up low freqs and more meat in the snare.
I demand that you post the whole song at least when it's finished.

I guess you both are wondering about the main/lead guitar and "licks"? That is played with the "Evolution Rock Standard" Kontakt library from Orange Tree Samples, just single notes played on keyboard. And yes, everything is sample based.

Vocal samples are taken/downloaded from video at https://archive.org/details/prelinger (the amazing Prelinger Archive), so it's even in the public domain.

And usually, I DO tend to roll minimal like dat

Makes me wonder what such a thread is :dunno:

Demand is duly noted! Any tips on how to get the low freqs cleaned up in a simple manner for a noob in mastering like myself?

And thank you all for listening & commenting!

My mastering advice would be, do it in the mix.
Set a steep low cut right at the lowest freq in bass and bd and lower the freq range 100 - 200Hz in both individually.

Enjoyed it moar, sounds moar polished than some *ahem* tracks I've heard in the main music thread. It's effective. Made me smile, so that means it succeeded! Only thing musically is that the bass is kinda call and no response; which works when ya have a response (later) but not so much when the riddim kicks in. Maybe only thing to address? Kept expecting occasional lil slap motifs & bass transpose etcs, but that's prolly just me :D
