    Evening,

I have a few but the one I most use is D16 Group's Nepheton,

Upon saying that the hand-clap is not crisp enough compared to
the original 808, Also the cowbell seems a little dull, I Guess
one could load the single hits as WAV's at 48khz/32bit into a
VSTi drum machine but Nepheton dose have a nice feel including
    MIDI learn,

I suppose I should of kept my 808 when I had one back in the 80'S.

    Cheers,

    Fat Bob

I dunno what to say, D16 has a very warm sound, imo the best vsti ive come across for the job. Its kicks sound amazing when run through a gain unit (PSP Vintage Warmer )
Cant recommend any other vsti, others probably can, but you should check out Goldbaby samples, they do an 808 pack and its great. They run the samples through various analog gear, as well as providing "clean" versions from an 808.

Ive never used the hardware 808 so I cant base what ive said off of a comparison, but check out Goldbaby... you wont be disappointed :mates:

    AudioRealism DrumMachine :
    Code:
    http://www.audiorealism.se
Good sounding too and you'll have 808, 909, 606 all in one.
It can also load your own .wav and .aiff samples into the drum parts - that's a real plus. (Yeah Goldbaby rocks !) =>
    Code:
    http://www.goldbaby.co.nz/superanalog808.html
    Code:
    http://www.goldbaby.co.nz/tape808.html
You can DL latest version on the dev's website (v1.2.1) and unlock with AiR's keygen from :
    AudioRealism.DrumMachine.VSTi.v1.2.0.Incl.Keygen
    Worth the try.

    Old thread, i know, but anyhow;

Best 808 (IMHO of course) if you dont want to go emulation: AddictiveDrums ReelMachines.

Extremely good basic samples (taken from the original 808 and recorded on tape - might be from GoldBaby) which can then be 'customized' via the Pitch and Volume modifiers as well as various FX.

That way you practically have endless possibilities with regards to shaping the individual drums. Be prepared to apply some EQing, though, especially in the treble range.

ReelMachines also includes LinnDrum, DMX, Simmons SDS-V, 909. (My personal fav is the DMX set. Its simply awesome.)

Also not bad, though clearly only second choice: EZdrummer EZX_Electronic via Beatstation. (808 and many other E-Sets.)

Sounds way better than in EZd or Superior (largely due to the default FX on the Beatstation) and can be fully customized and even mixed with other sets.

    Also comes with 808 grooves.

Doesnt integrate as easily into a mix as ReelMachines, though. (Material/project dependent.)

hello, the best 808 emulation is the D16Group Nepheton vst which is not a sample box, but a real analog synthesizer emulated by the best program ever coded by D16's polish staff.

in this way, the nepheton 808 drum emulator reproduce with best quality sounds of the real 808 roland drummachine.

there is no better way at the moment.

    my bests.

    Fred.

ps. if your clap is not as good as the real, maybe u should tweak that sound ?

Old post, but the world of emulations has changed in the meantime, so probably relevant to update.

Back in the early 2000s I was swearing by hardware, because it took me away from my computer and my PC crashed on the music software more often than not. Nowadays, I do everything "in the box" (except for gigging ;-).

I have used quite a few emulations over time. In hardware, I still have the JOMOX Alpha Bass, but you can hardly call that an emulation anymore, and it does have serious sequencing limits and even MIDI sync outages which make you go like "errrr..." in the middle of a gig. NOT interesting, despite the lovely sound.

Gradually, I turned to software, and from all the plugins I know, D16 Group emulations definitely stands out. I agree with Fredfromwest (love your name man :-D).

D16 used to be almost exclusively Windows oriented, but they released v2 cross platform versions for most of their products now, and they work like a breeze. I use Drumazon (TR909), Nepheton (TR808), Phoscyon and Lush on a M1 chip and latest OS without any issues.
The sound of those emulations is incredible, and you get plenty of sound shaping tools, including the D16 signature effects such as their bit crusher and distortion.

As Fredfromwest points out: these plugins use sound synthesis as their sound source, so no hit is ever exactly the same. That's the whole issue with using samples isn't it...

Don't get me wrong, I love the Goldbaby samples, but I hardly use them anymore.
Now that I use D16, I honestly don't see the point in using samples.

Also, these plugins just look too beautiful for me to resist :) :

"To each his own" I guess

The current D16 versions are very good, even just their FX plugins. If you happen to use Falcon (or UVI workstation), Prime8+ is worth checking out. It was free for a while as an expansion, and it is also part of Vintage Vault 4.

Roland's own TR-808 VST (Roland Cloud) is probably the most faithfull recreation.

    https://www.roland.com/global/products/rc_tr-808/

D16's Nepheton 2 adds a lot of impressive features.

    If you need a true 808 emulation never use a sample-based VST ... ;-)

    (Prime8+ IS sample based)

Do you think they hide this? Falcon content is largely sample-driven.
