I'm a really really bad keyboard player so I am contemplating with the option of buying a Fisman tripleplay since I am an accomplished guitarist.I am interested in using this for Audio production to write filmscores etc.

You could try with guitar to midi plugin first... So you could see if it's as easy as it seems.

 

I do, but I haven't used it enough yet to give you any real input. It is wireless which is convenient. I have used my roland GK-3 pickup with the Roland GI-20 midi converter interface a lot more, and that works really well.

I think if I could do all of these midi guitar solutions over again I'd go with GODIN guitars solution.

@Olymoon is correct. Load up that MIdi Guitar VST and give that a shot. I've used it before and it worked beyond my expectations of what a VST could do for this task, and it requires nothing more than your guitar, an instrument cable, and an audio interface (...with a DI).

I'd also like to add that after you play with guitar to midi 'conversion', and you mess around with VST synths, KONTAKT instruments, and triggering samples and slices etc, it changes the way you think about playing the instrument in a unique way. Lots of attention needs to be given to the execution of how you play notes which I would consider a unique and useful exercise in itself. For piano and keys, of course the voicings are going to be odd and minimal, but you can always edit your recorded chords with a mouse or record 3 or 4 string chords in 2-recording passes to give you more piano like chord voicings. You'll wonder why you didn't jump on this sooner!

yeah i echo what is said............i use my guitar without a special pickup using just an ordinary instrument cable and Midi Guitar 2 software. It functions quite well actually.....and then once you get used to playing a certain way to imitate the sound of other instruments its an excellent alternative. Worth a try anyway on the demo and see if it suits you.

 

I have used EVERY MIDI Guitar solution EVER created. Including guitar shaped button synth controllers like the Z-Tar and Yamha EZ-EG. Those track well but are not as satisfying to play as a real guitar plus they don't capture the subtle nuances produced by a real guitar. As was pointed out a Roland GK/GI-20 works pretty well tho, IMHO, the Axxon systems with piezo equipped guitars like the Godins and Brian Moore's or custom RMC equippped guitars were the best in hex pickup converters UNTIL the Triple Play. Shadow's SH-075 was totally self contained with the MIDI converter mounted directly on the guitar. I used one for years and was pretty happy with it. Steve Morse used and endorsed it so that should tell you something. The MIDI/2 VST plugins work ok for what they but they don't track NEARLY as well as the Roland system. Toys IMHO. But...NOTHING tracks as well as the Triple Play. It's only shortcoming is that the basic controller does not allow you to play anything but softsynths on your PC. BUT....there are several USB2MIDI hosts on the market that allow this. These include the Kenton USB2MIDI host, iConnect MIDI,(but not all models....do your homework), and Fishman's own FC-1 foot controller. I got an iConnect and it tracks hardware synths like lightning. IMHO the Triple Play is unmatched. Lower latency and tracking errors than ANY other MIDI guitar solution. After all it was developed by the same guy that created the Axxon converters.

But hey.....that's just my opinion......;)

 

There is a new one out there, that actually reads resistance from the string, through the frets and can interpolate from the that resistance not only what note is playing on each string, but exactly what is happening with the string, so it tracks bends, slides etc. really cleanly from what I can tell... I was pissed when I saw it because I actually had this idea a few years ago. But of course I didn't do anything with the idea lol. Could be promising?

I don't play guitar but I tried singing to MIDI Guitar plugin with a shitty microphone, not to mention my even shittier voice (picture a pig having a heart attack) and man, it's surprisingly good.

Not to mention other incredible MIDI features, like a MIDI plugin scripting system in which you can program in Lua (similar to javascript and other scripting languages). And it can host a chain of any VST/VST3 plugins. Awesome piece of software, written with the JUCE framework.

Perhaps I could even program a Pig-having-a-heart-attack-voice MIDI stabilizer plugin! (hell yeah, another one in my TOGEEK list)

 

I’ve gotten really good results lately with Repro-1 and Midi Guitar 2 in monophonic mode, with the noise gate set somewhat high and the legato setting on 50ms. Using a patch with some glide really helps with little accidental notes and pitch errors from slides etc.

Another solution are the pedal boards that include guitar to midi conversion. I own a Boss GT 100 which does this. The tests I've done gave me a good impression, tracking was good, specially with mono synth, but I didn't tried much.

I have tried several bass MIDI instruments and owned one (built-in). It requires precision, no matter which you choose. There are more than only one type. The type where the circuitry is completely built into the instrument or the pitch to MIDI converters. These two are more commonly known. The most accurate one I tried was Roland's VB-99 which is no longer available except on Ebay. I found five sounds I could use on a regular basis. In retrospect, I should have bought it, because you do not need much more than five other than FX here and there. The setup looks very similar to the VB-99 so it may be as good or better? I say that because the external MIDI triggering from the VB-99 module and not its sounds, was unpleasant.

If it tracks well without 'flamming' (uncomfortable latency), then it is probably worthwhile.

You can get some good results from guitar to MIDI stuff, both hardware and software but, at first, you'll be shocked at how sloppy your guitar playing actually is! These converters pick up every tiny string vibration so you might think you are a precise, clean note picker but the converter will pick up every not quite muted string, every slight touch of the wrong string etc. It's almost like learning a new instrument. I spent a lot of time editing MIDI after the event. Best results are had with "blurry" instrument types like string ensembles and fat synth patches Worst results are had with things like piano, which presents your playing with brutal honesty!

But it is a very satisfying experience to play a synth sound with a guitar.
