Hi there,
my primary motivation for topic like this is to avoid linux-based forums.
Linux is great OS! However its community, which you as a user partly rely on, is incredibly egoistic and socially filled with hatred for anything remotely related to Windows. That was one of the reasons why I hesitated so much before moving to Linux Mint. They can talk all day on how Windows are baaad and how linux is goood, but they never realize their dreamworld.
The truth is, both OSes are useful for different tasks. Personally I run Mint in tripleboot configuration with Windows 7 and XP.

OK, enough introduction let's get to it.
The purpose of this thread is to help linux users run their software, be it through Wine or other means.

GoldWave

Only 5.xx version will work in Wine, with limited functionality. The program cannot save files or record.
You may experience a hang in which the program refuses to start. In that case, install Gecko addition to Wine

iZotope RX3
The software seems to be working fine, but it needs windows fonts copied to your .wine directory. No luck with RX4 so far, most likely thanks to iLok requirement.

REAPER
Works fine, slightly sluggish, but didn't expect any problems on my part.

NI Kontakt
Standalone works fine up to 5.3.1, VST not tested so far.

The only problem with Linux is the latency if I use any kind of virtualization...

It works for mixing, but it is impossible for me to get an acceptable live monitoring from any DAW.

So sad that the developers don`t support it.

 

This thread is excellent and should be more active. Anyone with other plugins that work in a Linux OS?

 

Reaper has a native Linux version (no WINE) on their beta site which they've been doing for a few years. u-he has many of their synths and effects for native Linux as well:

These can be found at Linux Public Beta. Also, Ubuntu Studio uses a low-latency kernel which is better suited for DAW and video work. Bitwig, Traction, Audor, LMMS, Rosegarden all have native Linux DAWS as well. I've played with some of these, but never did anything serious with them. My recent Windows system crash (bad SSD) forced me full time on to my Linux rig for a while, and really got me thinking about these again.

Just want to add that Renoise works like a charm under Linux as well, and all native/ported plugins to the platform works flawlessly as far as i have tested.

 

Every version of Linux has a low-latency kernel. I think what should be said, is that Ubuntu Studio installs the low-latency kernel on install so it's ready to go after you install it.

 

Linux MInt 18.3 xfce is the best linux distro for desktop use. for daw and vst, windows 8.1 is still the king.

 

Kontakt 5.6.6 portable confirmed working in both exe and dll variant through Wine 3.0.1

 

Linux Mint with KXStudio front end , Realtime low-latency kernel , Wine RT , runs 99% of win audio software and i mean 99% , seven years never had to reboot , yes really , i Love this O.S

 

Next step would be ArchLinux x64 with just xinit, iceWM and wine. Extremely fast with very little HDD/RAM footprint (<5GB HDD, <150MB RAM).
With Wine 3.0.1, majority of VST plugins in REAPER work perfectly, although the GUI might be sometimes lagging.

 

Lol im useing an old 32bit machine with 4gig of ram , recorded this a couple weeks after getting out of hospital very poorley and still very weak = https://gitlab.bandcamp.com/releases , Reaper , superior drummer , murcuriall spark , nebula 3 ( ownhammer cabs ) , amplesound metalray , ozone 5 , god knows how it works but it does lol

 

REAPER works better with Wine, than native linux REAPER using LinVST server.
With Wine, I could access all my VSTs without issues, LinVST on the other hand had drawing issues for some plugins.

 

Man, you completely nailed it. I use Linux only for typical Server use because of my work but I couldn't help this "hat off" little OT.

I use Linux for the sole purpose of running windows stuff on , a bit like faking alzheimers to avoid speaking to the wife but its actually pretty good ..........................

 

Kontakt 6.3.1 portable confirmed working with Wine 5.10, however Library Manager needs to be run with Windows 10 compatibility, as the window dialog which is created on "Add Library" is of incorrect type (select file). When run with W10 compatibility, this dialog is select folder, and allows for proper selection of Kontakt lib

 

I don't see this mentioned here, but I've used it and though I don't currently use linux to produce, I did run it on my TV computer for some time, and therefore I was experimenting with the audio production potential, and because a good buddy of mine plays guitar and would like to play and record and use some of the effects/tab software I have so I was investigating for him. AV Linux is pretty decent. It's not based on Ubuntu, its based on MX Linux, and it was specifically designed for this purpose. I was able to install FL Studio via WINE, and this comes preloaded with a shit ton of audio/video stuff, more so audio though. JACK can be a bit confusing and intimidating and it will probably piss you off, but once you get that going your golden. I've used Reaper, Bitwig, and Ardour - they all work well. Linux has some really cool guitar suites that I really liked. Honestly the only reason I stopped using Linux for my TV is because I use it as a file server, and I keep my external SSD's connected to it and I was having a really hard time with Samba, and permissions and Windows Machines not on a domain accessing things. So I switched back to Windows. Sucks too because I really like the way stock Gnome45 looks on a $25 42" TV at 1366x768 that I got from the Goodwill lol, I have a firestick, but YouTube ads annoy me and I use some opensource software that was ported to Windows to watch it.
