"VST 2 was introduced in 1999"
    well biq whoop.
I've got socks older than that.
And I believe there are even some technologies a little older than 1999 that we still have a use for...
the wheel, for example, or bread.
    If it ain't broke.

Nothing I guess (they don't charge sth for the License). But isn't it the behaviour of a quasi monopolist (VST Inventor) to disturb the circles of competitors as Ableton is (do the Propellerheads make use of VST3 or 2?). They just do it because they can. :) And always they claim to have only the benefits of customers in mind.

The VST2 SDK is licensed under a propietary license and Steinberg remains copyright holder. According to the text of the License Agreement the License has no time limitation. But the License is granted under german jurisdiction, meaning any contract can be terminated because of an "important reason". As Steinberg remains holder of the copyright they may decide that issuing a new SDK (VST 3) is such a "important reason" (after a grace period (2013...2018). Every licensee needs to sign the Agreement, so Steinberg knows everyone who uses it's VST 2 SDK legally and is able to end the contract.

While they're at it, M$ could release sources for Win XP and Win 7, since as they portray those OS - they couldn't care less about them.
But of course we'll probably never see this in our lifetime. Though I'm keeping that 'probably' there, who knows. Back in 2012 we said iLok2 was impenetrable. :winker:

Just like in that TV show Baking Bread...or was it something else? :dunno::rofl:

There are well-known plugin manufacturers that do not yet offer VST3 versions (e.g. AAS, Air Music, Image Line, NI, Rob Papen, Spectrasonics, Synapse Audio, u-he). As long as this is so, most hosts (DAWs) will continue to support VST2 in addition to VST3. Other plugin vendors have been programming VST3 for a longer time (like Fabfilter, Izotope, Melda, TBPro), they will be considering whether they will continue to support VST2 because of course they want to keep their programming cost down.
It's all a movement out there, we'll see how it goes on.

Anyway, there is no reason to dump all VST2 plugins now! :)

Some plugins are indeed unstable as VST3, i think PSP E27 forgets its settings in each new session as a VST3 plugin, perhaps that was corrected by now, idk.
But dumping VST2 was bound to happen, though it should be slow and not abrupt, could be that Cubase X wont support it, but other DAWS should be safe imo.

No, it'll affect everyone as they're planning on removing the VST2 headers and .cpps from the VST3 SDK, which means noone will be able to develop new VST2 plugins using official sources. 3rd party mirrors of the VST2 and VST2-included version of VST3 will likely remain, but lots of paranoid developers will avoid using anything that doesn't have 'Steinberg/Yamaha' on the tin.

What needs to happen, and what has needed to happen for the last 20 years, is for the DAW manufacturers to come up with a open standard that isn't mandated by one (sometimes pig-headed) company.

Once upon a time it was a thread about VST2.
Meantime, it's obviously about the lifespan of socks and underpants... :dunno:

I think it may have become about the lifespan of the vst2 standard being perhaps too short.
Anyways, certainly shorter than the lifespan of some (well rotated) paired articles.
