Its good to see someone who actually play and sing very well.
Love the sound and usually I do not like until it reach 40 tracks.
I still working to improve all studio and my monitors are not ready but.. I am listening in my 58 tv that I use as a monitor.
When the back vocals (I love 40 tracks of vocals too) there is a resonance boosted probably because have the same fx? it was intentional?
Also the harmonica have a less amount of fx, was it intentional to reflect lonely?
i always admire your words an now your sound. Love to see more.
    Hugs from Brazil
Harvest is ones of the best albums right?

My buddy, great job. The slower tempo gives it a nice, laid-back vibe. BTW, you've got an amazing voice. This is a cover that I could easily find on any contemporary indie playlist on Spotify or the like. Please, keep them coming. How did you go about the recording? Please, share the specs.

  3. After I wore out the grooves of the first Harvest album I had to buy a second to listen to it still some more. I took the worn out first one and nailed it into the wooden paneled wall over my bed. So, yes, to me, Harvest is one of the best albums.

Thank you for your kindness and I will hopefully be able to do more, health of body and mind willing.

Both vocals as well as the guitar and harmonica are all routed to the same sends but in varying amounts. The harmonica was intentionally left a little more dry as I wanted to raise the energy a little during that section. Reverb would have blurred the feeling.

I hope that you get your monitors back soon, and hugs from Switzerland.

  4. Gracias, Hermano!

Two mics, Vocals...Gefell UMT70S into Warm Audio Tonebeast (x731 op amp, Tone +6 engaged and output transformer in, steel transformer) and WA76, 5-7dB reduction on peaks, 4-1, Attack 12 o'clock, Release 10 o'clock. The guitar was into a Gefell M930 into a Daking Mic Pre One, rolloff at 75hz and ITB a Klanghelm DC8C 2 comp at 4.3-1, attack at 17,37ms and release at 158ms, Punch setting and 100 mix. Gain reduction no more than 5dB on peaks. Voxox cables all around. The ethereal sound is Repro-5 on the Sonic Underworld SU Ambient Airborne preset and I used the pitch wheel to good effect.

On the mix, the UMT70S channel was boosted by Airwindows PurestGain into FabFilter Pro-DS Mono FabFilter Pro for the ssssss, and just little gentle wide reductions at 101Hz and 493Hz and 18,000Hz with the PSP E27. It was sent into Phoenix Verb (Large Hall, Large Church Back Dark) and FabFilter Timeless 2 for the delay I programed. The Gefell M930 channel had another PurestGain into another E27 (gentle touches) and nothing else. It was sent only to the Phoenix Verb and no delay. The three harmony tracks had no processing at all on the channel. There are three sections of harmony, one voice per chorus. The first chorus had no deley but had reverb, the other two as well as the last verse had the addition of the delay. I controlled my dynamics thoughtfully as well as eq'ing with distance and mic placement, singing the harmonies in one take and didn't feel they warrented any additional support. The harmonica went through the UMT70S/Warm chain and was processed with SmackLabs very cool 63x Overeasy Compressor/Limiter with up to 12dB reduction at peak. I love this compressor...simple, effective and sounds great. I might redo the harmonica part as it was past 10pm and I was feeling self conscious of being too loud with my next door neighbor's two year old sleeping on the other side of a wall that our rooms share, as well as my upstairs neighbors were home. It is what it is.

The Main buss had the Acoustica Computer Music version of their Pink EQ just cutting a little at 50hz and as well at 4khz. I did a little lite limiting with the FabFilter Pro-L because I like dynamics. It just tickled the signal and the greatest reduction was 4dB once. I had to boost the gain 10.2 decibels to get it there because I record at -18 to -12 on tracks.

The guitar is my Martin D-15M strung with 13-56 Elixer Nanowebs. I set it up for heavier gauge after the 1st restringing with 12's when I first bought it. It sings with the 13's. The harmonica is a Seydel 1847 in C maj. It has an aluminum comb and German silver tines and weighs a ton. I have my harmonica students buy Seydel harmonicas because they are easy to bend notes with and are almost indestructible. They cost more but you get what you pay for. They are not the warmest because of the comb, though I like them a lot. I have Hohners which have a woody tone if I want that.

  8. Was talking to Beth just yesterday about our enjoyment of reading liner notes, so when mercurysoto asked,....

Little by little I'll do my singer/songwriter tunes because I never recorded any but a lonely few. I'm gonna ditch the drums, and other accoutrements to lay bare and offer them as they originally came to me. Recording with a band would be great to interpret them in that format, but the songs can hold up for themselves, me banging on guitar and my plaintive wailing.

Nice version superliquidsunshine and in the style of Neil Young too. I like your voice and it's refreshing to hear this kind of music compared to the usual EDM.

  10. Thanks Brother.

"My Heart" from this album is so simple yet so effective. Beautiful song.

I'm late to the game but this is awesome. You're a gifted player. It sometimes makes me wonder what you're doing here, or rather, 'where else you are'.

This is also a perfect summary of the industry today:
"Singin' songs for pimps with tailors
Who charge ten dollars at the door."

  15. Thanks Pinkman for the compliment. I love playing guitar, keyboards, hand drums, harmonica and putting pen to paper writing mostly poetry...but most of all, singing Although I have painted, skulpted and have used clay as a medium of expression, music has been the thing that has always been my go to.

And what am I doing here? I have developed good friendships over the last seven years and enjoy talking gear, tecnique and just everything audio. I have gotten to audition as well as discuss tons of software instruments and plugins that I might never have been able to the extent that I have thanks in large part to the close proximity of the sister site. What a great thing that we have going. I am so very grateful to be here hanging with the likes of you and the others. It would be weird without this place.✌
