Hey guys, I'm doing a rewrite/cover project with some people where basically we make an 80's song modern, ya know something that could get by today.

I wanted to get some opinions on What I have so far for my version of Separate Ways by Journey. It's much lower and way heavier than the original. The drums are also compleatly rewritten from almost scratch. Adds a lot to the song.

Check it out tell me what you think. And any opinions on maybe how to push it a little further.

    FL Studio 10
    Kontakt 5
    Prominy V-Metal [kontakt library]
    Vir2 BasIs [kontakt library]
Superior Drummer 2 [Avatar/Metal Foundry/Evil Drums custom kit]
EzDrummer [Metal Machines overlay for added more random velocity]
    Nexus 2 [square synths]
    Guitar Rig 5
    TSE Tube Screamer
    Slate Digital Mastering

I believe that's all that is in this track. I'm debating replacing the bass drum with a more "arena rock" sounding ones from Addictive Drums, but I'm still on the fence about it because I don't really like the sound quality of Addictive drums.

ATM I'm just using my on board. I have a Project I/O I usually use but lack of space atm. As for the guitar rig, what your hearing is 2 different custom set ups. V-Metal is double tracked so each track goes to one of the Guitar Rigs and they layer over each other. In all honesty it's the only way to get a real killer sound out of it. Other than that your also hearing the TSE tubescreamer which makes alot of difference also. That coupled with V-Metal being DI on EMG81's give it that nice sound.

My main custom guitar rig is based off of "Big Monster" setting and then just pair it with another "Metal" preset with the same panning and it'll come out sounding ok with some mixing.

Of course idealy this isn't my favorite amp sim, it's just the easiest to get a decent result from without pulling my hair out. I get a better sound out of Revalver but it just never seems to mix right with the style.
