That is only a popular assumption that may be a misconception. We are all exposed to wisdom and teachings from a young age, some of which we live by and some of which we reject. A father might advise his child to save money rather than spend it everytime he gets some. I think you can open a savings account from the age of 7. If the child acts on that wisdom and starts saving money, the child instantly becomes wise as well. That child can share that wisdom with their friends. In fact, we can only grow up by acquiring and applying wisdom. Young people teach their parents and grandparents how to use computers, TVs, mobile phones and the internet. It is a misconception that only old people can be wise. It is a misconception based on the assumption that old people are no longer learning because they have lived longer. It is, in fact, a sweeping ageist assumption. I rest my case :bleh:

I believe that it is interesting people from our grandparents and before generation, had strengths and better at certain things we now rely on tech for, whether communication with people talking face to face, working hard, focus and clarity, dedication, etc. My position is that I try to take the wisdom from them and take the best of today's world (use tech to improve life, never doing crappier version of the real thing!)ex. texting to a person 5 feet away !

It's common sense that people from any age can give you good advise. And self experience of course.

But I think that one thing is interesting about someone older than you. It hasn't to be always the age, but it's the most common.
I'm talking about the perspective. It's a powerful thing. You could also call it more objectiveness. You doesn't talk and think the same about one thing when you're living it (be it work, romance, whatever,...) than when it has passed or changed, partially or completely.

Like almost always, the best is having opinions of both.

Hard to believe June will be 10 years since he passed away. He was one of my idols from a very young age. Still is. But not so much from a comedy standpoint but a wisdom standpoint.

An old man I spoke with at the park the other day had some wise words for me as we were having a long conversation. He told me "If your compassion takes you down a bad path, it doesn't mean it's for the worst. Sometimes there's lessons you need to learn in your darkest hours that will come of good use in your brightest hours. So let your compassion be what drives you in life. And everything else will fall into place."

I can only admire those who have had elders - relatives - in their lives from whom to learn...wisdom, humility, compassion. The good qualities. There are many in my generation that have learned only what not to do from the insensitivities of elders dedicated exclusively to accumulating wealth, finding loopholes in the law and mouthing hypocrises. I personally have learned from the actions and attitudes of my teachers, generous people who understood the weaknesses and strengths of the early phases of life. Such people can be found in all walks of life, and they are to be treasured.

I recall a weathered wooden plaque I once saw on a visit to a small New England shipyard many years ago:
    We Build Good Ships Here
At a Profit if We Can
At a Loss if We Must
    But Always
    Good Ships.

That quote you are talking about is from Collis P. Huntington and that was at the Newport News Shipyard in Virginia. I been there before. Although I may have seen the same quote at a shipyard in Rhode Island. I'm from the coast of New England. Although Virginia is not part of New England.

The theory behind old age bringing wisdom is just that: a theory. The person who has lived longer has a larger pool of empirical data from which to draw a conclusion.

Doesn't mean they are gonna do it. As people we are exceptionally good at cherry picking facts to support what we want as opposed to what is.

I've known folks profound and foolish, generous and self-centered, brilliant and ignorant. Often at the same time and across all age and other demographic groups. I've never really seen a pattern.

Unfortunately I seem to have known more people (and seemingly more each day) who hail from one particular camp.

The ones who live their life based on their first lessons as infants.
    Namely:

A: If you are obnoxious enough somebody will eventually give in and give you what you want. If it's taking to long, turn up the volume.

B: You can shit all over anything you want to because there will always be someone to come along and clean up your mess.

    C: Piss on 'em.

Yes I'm a card carrying cynic.

I'm old enough I HAVE THE RIGHT BYGUM!:guru:

    Sarcastic too...
