Some westerners can differentiate. Some have learned a little Cantonese and Mandarin, some can speak it quite well and can tell the difference to Japanese. Some of us westerners cannot. That's sort of like saying most Chinese have no idea how to speak English properly. That is very untrue.
I do however get your point.
I also notice Korean and Thai sometimes gets confused with the Chinese languages too. I think that is the same for any culture where the language is different and written differently. I have seen Russians and Ukrainians get offended when someone thought they were the other. I have seen Canadians get very upset when someone thought they were American.
Cyrillic language writing and Arabic are two others.
None of us are perfect.

Kana and Kanji are used in the Japanese language.
Kanji are Chinese characters with different pronunciations. Excusable, when characters are exactly the same?

It's interesting if we were to break English down to other layers as well. The spelling and pronunciation of words are different depending on which English country you are in. (e.g. Organise vs Organize) and just to mess it up further, some countries allow different spellings for the same word (e.g analyze and analyse).
The same goes for accents and phrases that are native to different parts of a country. American accents differ, so do Canadian, so do Australian and Kiwi and there are plenty of variances in the U.K too.
Possibly the worst differences for anyone that is learning English are faced with learning are the the differences between words that sound the same, for example:
"There" - "They're" and "Their".

I imagine there is someone in the world that can speak every language well and write it but I have not met them yet so I figure none of us are perfect and we can only do the best we can.

no, kanji漢字 and hanzi(汉字) are not same, not same characters with different pronunciation. japanese has unique Chinese characters developed by Japanese, those japanese developed chinese characters has japanese pronounce but doesnt has chinese pronounce, even chinese doesnt know how to read and waht its meaning, how about western people? probably most western didnt konw.
