Yeah could work for some particular materials, for instance with old tracks...but some new software to connect to soulseek network?
I'm on Mac, tested original app, work but it's slow and with some graphic artifacts...

 

Thats strange, for me it´s super light and snappy, but I´m on windows.

 

192vorbis & 224aac can look as good (or better than) 320mp3 so That doesn't really say anything.

 

For most, something like these audio ripping apps might work but when you get spoiled by working with high resolutions constantly, suddenly a low rez conversion sounds like trying to listen through heavily filtered and muffled audio and becomes too much of a distraction.. for me at least. I was a bit surprised at the lack of info when I tried to find specs on standard resolutions of stream sites so I think it might not be that common of an issue.

slow? you mean the app or the downloads? i use it from years (on Mac) and it's a rocket... and almost all the stuff that you can find on spotify is on soulseek (except for, of course, minor indipendent act or things like these)... if you just have problem with download speed, check your ports... back to the topic... sidify it's nothing more than a direct sound grabber and it's not new to distortion and artifacts... within the actual methods for "ripping" from spotify you always get a compressed (if not a overcompressed) sound file... for the quality of the streaming per se you can always set it up on spotify should it go from Normal to Extreme... premium only of course...

I don't get why anyone would want to compress an already compressed audio file to a different compressed format, that's where you really start losing quality.
Is there no way to get the original compressed file like in OGG Vorbis or AAC format?

 

On Spotify they must grab WAVs from some CD or DSD first, and then lossy encode them to OGG for streaming. (Surely they do not play their CDs or DSDs directly into streaming procedure). /This is, if they are honest, but that simply can not be/
I guess they do/did not have access to more than 1% of music they offer on original CDs, so most of their to-be-OGG-encoded 'WAVs' come from some murky (mostly lossy) sources downloaded from everywhere on internet. No matter the actual bit-rate of files they downloaded, they must force them into 320 kbps in order to offer the '320 kbps quality'. So inevitably, most of their OGGs are in fact lossy re-encoded even starting with their HDDs.
Streaming bitrate does not say anything about the original bitrate od the files they do stream, but just declares nominal re-encoding bitrate for the particular stream aimed at a particular subscription class.
If you then re-encode your downloaded WAV or OGG to mp3, it is (in the second case) at least the third encoding of the same file, but it also includes additional distortions stemming from different procedures for encoding mp3 files compared to procedures of the OGG standard.
'Sometimes' such providers use 'spectral filling' method, to cheat the customers that have access to spectral analysers that the file delivered is actually 320-bit file, but it is just had been routinely pumped-up with pink noise in order for file to 'reach' the end of the spectrum without any musical content. For that reason, you should thoroughly check the spectral spread during your spectral testing not just look at the edges.

 

All of these sh*tify converters just record the spitify stream via a virtual cable kind of solution.
For those who have premium account, it's not really that helpful but what bugs me is these developers lie about their method as if it were converter.
And once I started to receive alerts from Spotify that someone had logged in my account somewhere in distant 3rd World countries I've never been to. My spotify was linked to my FB account that have 2 steps authentication on, highly unlikely that someone could go that route.
So, if you are premium member, avoid using these sh*ts logged on.
Why I did try these was because I wanted to get songs that went greyed out after a while in my region. And surprise! These fake converters don't work with those greyed songs.
If Spotify didn't change the list of available songs, I wouldn't be bothered with these sh*tyfree solutions.
And that €8 for 6 users (family plan) a month is really not big deal. So far it works with "family" members living in different continents.

So using the Piezo recorder doesn't seem to be worse at all, at least for recording something every now and then.
