Hi, do you know how to create this effect by trent reznor at 2.22, the computer game sounding arp explosion ? Any help would be appreciated.

 

It's a simple square wave arp with pan and volume modulations.

 

On the stems it says "SID Melody". On that same track around 3:30 it comes back in, you can hear the overall sound of the tone of the synth and the amount of echo and delay as it is played slowly and more melodically. The sound returns at 4:48 with what sounds like a cut and paste from 2:22.


There is another track called "SID" that enters at 3:14. This one also has the rapid multi octave arpeggio running. This stereo track has two different performances the one on the left side sounds very similar to the setting on "SID Melody" at 2:22. The one on the right is very similar but darker and rounder and in a lower register. There seems to be 4 or 5 repetitions of a one bar chunk, then there is a different performance on each side involving using the octave key and the glide function involved. The song concludes with the fast arpeggios again on the left side and a more sporadic blast of notes on the right side.

With a cursory google search.... in the synth world there is a subculture of DIY and small batch manufacturers making modern synths with the "SID" chip used in the Commodore C64 personal computer. In fact it used 2 of them. There seems to be a large selection of modern midi and cv controlled synths that employ this chip in their design.

There's defo a preset ike that in Plogues Chipsounds vst or there's Super Audio Cart PC by Impact Soundworks or there's this hardwaRE bad boy

 

you've got this kind of sound in any ReFX Vanguard, Spire, omnisphere etc...

Reznor works with all kind of things, from kontakt libraries to pure vintage analog ... I doubt he "made" this one

Wow, thanks for all the responses, I tried downloading chipsounds before but I couldn't get it to work on my computer for some reason but I will look into it again. Therapsid sounds amazing on that demo.

I got sidizer and a preset called arp minor 7pw sounds pretty much exactly like it, I could only get the demo of chipsounds working so I don't know what setting it is in that.
