Why aren't Waves plugins getting outdated and still used?!

  3. Well it's the two fallacies of gear: this is good because it's old, and, this is good because it's new.

I can remember the days when you could find SSL desks in skips as the Profools plague swept through London's studios at the turn of the century.

Were they wrong? It's a hard call, even Beardie Scheps has given up on loading his console each and every time. Would Waves be a better plugin maker if they continually ripped and rewrapped the same old EQs into new skins? Or would it be plugs as crack cocaine? Gotta be new, gotta be new. But they don't know why.

    Wish I had one too.

  4. They were right for the wrong reasons. The simplicity afforded by software based systems with instant recall could supplant the clunky moveable faders and also save money due to much lower maintenance costs, much of the bulk being a dedicated tech person who was involved in replacing worn parts and tightening screws, etc for the larger well known and expensive just to open the door in studios scattered around the globe. What everyone soon realized was that the early incarnation of converters and the harsh sound of the new mass medium CD might have lessened the hurt on their ears. Gone was the onboard SSL glue of its compressor as well as the kilometers of wire lending sweet harmonic distortion that our brains react so well to. Nowadays many with cash in their pocket and the savvy are responding to their inner ear and returning to wires and transformers in the form factor of summing boxes to once again reap the benefits of the audio paths of old. So now we can have the best of both worlds, and as converters become ever more less cutting, truer to their analogue counterparts and as well come down in price, our ears as well as our pocketbooks can smile, smile, smile.

In my experience with guitar amps and distortions, the analog world is much much better, and the digital simulations are not appealing. However, for other effects like EQ or delay, the in-the-box world is doing better. For instance, I don't use my analog delay anymore for recording.

Who is writing your tunes, whilst you discuss pointless topics? Whenever I go on to the sister site to see what is about, I always see endless pointless threads being discussed to death, meanwhile, the tunes aren't going to write themselves... Chop chop! :)

    Old topic resurected:)
From my point of view, as a studio manager doing shit load of radio and TV commercials:
    1. Waves is backward compatible. IMPORTANT!
    2. Simple and clean GUI. Gets me fast where I want to be.
    3. There are couple of gems there, just kills everything else and is SIMPLE: Rvox, L2, Doubler, Rcomp, MV2!!! (brilliant), TrueVerb (yes, trashy but cuts those Early Reflections like butter, and sits as an insert if necessary )
    4. Again ITS FAST. Starring at some fancy GUI with millions of buttons might by interesting; listening for hours to 100000 compressors and looking for this warmth, distortion,3D shit....and the difference is 1%...sorry time is money, and those all sound more or less the same and TV station doesn't give a shit anyway....
    5. Zero CPU hit.....
    6. Surround gems....(the ER panner!! Gold)
    7....
    8....
And so on....the list goes on..

I don't like what you said [lol], but I'd be a fool not to agree with a lot of it.

Their plugins are not "la crème" [as Hungarians would say] of the plugins sound-wise, especially these days, but they definitely get the work done fast and pretty well. The advantage is also that loads of studios have them. [cracked or otherwise]

Just having Waves Renaissance plugins, Waves SSL, API, V-Series, H-Series and a few other gems like maybe [my favs] L2, LP EQ, NLS, both Puig-s, CLA 76, 2A and 3A is all one need for some serious production *work*.

However, Fabfilter, IKM, Plugin Alliance, UAD and some other companies are close to having similar status these days.

    Cheers!
