@foster911 Again, this subject is not a debate. You're just being plainly wrong for the infintieth time of your life, and probably for the 327th time today and here in Paris it's only 9:30AM.

Jazz is the second most important theorical CORPUS since common practice. It's not an opinion, it's not a judgement it's a goddamn fact. An observation.
As in : "look it rains today". Do you also piss everyone else in the room goin "No it's not raining" ?

It's a measurable fact: in term of number of books written and schools and the simple fact that every skilled musician know their jazz.

Think of it as "MUSIC THEORY PART II : JAZZ.".

    Now shut up.

foster you just dont get it do u ? everyone is trying to do you a favour, to point out a simple truth....you spend so much energy trying to prove your intellectual prowess and presumably your musical ability...yet your music speaks volumes....yes you are a seeker, that we all have in common....seek in humility, my friend...learn that a scale is chosen because it has a flavour, a colour a sound...and when you choose altrnating tones from that group of tones you get chords, firstly triads then other colours as you add extensions.......you notice a story emerging...then you pivot to another group of tones and find a differnt set of colours. try this C D E F G A B all these tones sounded together will sound like a C note, particularly if the C note is lowest..if u accent the C E G you will hear a strong C major sound....flatten the E and magic begins...and the journey of discovery. the jazz guys are far down this road of discovery.....music is not a sport. it is an art...all art demands a discipline of self in order to discover these simple ideas
    all the best

Music production is similar to this dynamic word finding system. Assume you enter the word "real" at the start point then it shows all the related words, then you choose "true". After that you select "right" and so on. This system has been designed by a person. Anyone can design the similar system with different words at each branch. As a user you can't predict what would happen next or which word would suit your needs most.

But your chord and key diagrams are static and stationary and plot the whole picture of selections in the beginning and don't allow the users to freely select all the possibilities and non-possibilities. As I said, everyone can make similar words' synonym system but your adhered music language is reluctant for the free selections. There's not an absolute system that pictures all the related words and anyone interprets the words' connections differently.

*ooooops! realised i got this in the wrong thread, should be in the jazz theory thread

    In short:
    - Learn notation basics - will help enormously in learning from books and online sources

    - Improv in jazz *traditionally* involves outlining the functional movement of chords in the song meaning the song is made up of cadences (or the set up for the cadence, i.e. 2- 5 without going to the 1)
that take it temporarily into other keys other than the one it will end with. To do that most of improv is made from the actual notes of each chord played melodically, and even if you do not wish to learn all the theory, just memorising many well worn jazz cliches and licks will get you playing jazz improvs esp if you do it with the triplety swing feel(1st note takes up 2 of a triplet second note is the last note of the triplet). For slow to med fast tempi.

and this is how i wd play /improv on a simple jazz standard:

and I do not study it any more. Unfortunately a lot of it is already in my blood now. Hard to get rid of it once you got it in you Im afraid.
