PaulXStretch plugin



PaulXStretch – VST2/AU Plugin for extreme time stretching and other spectral processing of audio

This plugin is based on the PaulStretch algorithm/standalone app. (Paul’s Extreme Time Stretch.)

No manual or demonstration video exists at the moment, but some information follows :

The plugin is only suitable for radical transformation of sounds. It is not suitable at all for subtle time corrections and such. Ambient music and sound design are probably the most suitable use cases.

The plugin can either load an existing audio file from disk to process or it can capture audio from the plugin inputs. (The capture mode is started/stopped with the “Capture” parameter.)

The plugin will require the DAW audio engine to be running on the track it is inserted on. How that is achieved in various hosts is specific to those hosts. Some hosts will just immediately start running the plugin, in other hosts one may need to record/input monitor enable the track or something else needs to be done.

The plugin has lots of latency, that isn’t reported to the host currently. I will have to investigate later what, if anything, can be done about those issues.

I have tested that the plugin loads and runs in :

Windows : Reaper, Ableton Live Lite 9, FL Studio, JUCE plugin host.

Mac Os : Reaper (VST), Ableton Live Lite 9 (VST), GarageBand (AU), Plogue Bidule (VST).

3.DRAnalyzer

DRAnalyzer is a VST spectrum analyzer that can analyze the dynamic range for each band. Although the normal spectrum analyzer can display only the instantaneous value of the spectrum, DRAnalyzer can display the past spectrums as a distribution. Since it is possible to see the dynamic range for each band from the distribution, compatibility with multiband compressors is outstanding. You can optionally correct the spectrum according to the human auditory characteristics, so you can see the sound as it is heard.

The Bricasti M7 is a highly prized true stereo reverb processor, widely considered to contain some of the best synthetic reverb algorithms to date, and has been captured for multiple impulse response packs freely available online. Commonly only the first bank of algorithms are available (the version 1 algorithm), although a newer second generation algorithm is available that features a higher degree of modulation. Both have been captured for the LiquidSonics M7 Fusion-IR preset pack.

Due to the nature of the various sources of modulation within the M7 algorithms, the commonly used reverb impulse response sampling approach (typically swept-sine) has the effect of averaging away all of the modulation that is key to much of the character of the M7. This is suitable for a static convolution processor, but the Fusion-IR sampling and processing approach takes multiple snapshots in time of the device and processes them concurrently so is able to much more closely reproduce the character of the original device as it varies over time.

The Nord Modular G2 is one of electronic music’s most beloved departed pieces of gear. Now it gets a second lease on life, for free – with Csound.

You’d be forgiven for not knowing this happened. The work was published as an academic paper in Finland last June, authored by three Russian engineers – one of whom works on nuclear physics research, no less. (It’s not the right image, but if you want to imagine something involving submarines, go for it. That’s where I want my next sound studio, inside a decommissioned nuclear sub from the USSR, sort of Thomas Dolby meets Hunt for Red October. But I digress.)

Anyway, Gleb Rogozinsky, Mihail Chesnokov, and Eugene Cherny, all of St. Petersburg, had a terrific idea. They chose to simulate the behavior of the Nord Modular G2 synth itself, and translate its patch files into use as Csound – the powerful, elegant free software that has a lineage to the first computer synth.

The upshot: patches (including those you found on the Web) now work on any computer, Mac, Windows, Linux, and Linux machines like Raspberry Pi – for free. And the graphical editor that lets you create Nord Modular patches just became a peculiar Nord-specific editor for Csound. (Okay, there are other visual editors for Csound, but that’s still cool, and the editor is still available for Mac and Windows free from the original manufacturer, Clavia.)

And best of all, if you have patches you created on the Nord Modular, now they’ll work for all eternity – or, rather, at least as long as human civilization lasts and keeps making computers, as I’m pretty sure Csound will remain with us for that. Let’s hope that’s… not a short period of time, of course.
