Can the basic Omnisphere program and all it's updates be stored and installed from a large capacity flash drive? Thank you.

Only the Steam folder can be moving on a usb key what I don't advise. On an external hard drive in USB 3 it's ok.

Omnisphere installation requires the following folders: ProgramData, Programs and Program Files (x86) via Windows

Installing Omnisphere on a USB key is impossible for me. But maybe I'm wrong. The best is to wait for other opinions.

    But you can try.

The sample library can reside on an external drive no problem, I've done that, but for Omnisphere itself what you seem to ask for is a "portable version".
The problem is the authentication. Even if you "portablized" it, it would only run on the machine where the auth code matches.
I'd rather install Omnisphere where you plan to use it and carry the STEAM library around...

As stated before, the 55 GB folder could be installed on a fast external device (USB3 or Firewire?) but it remains to be seen how practical this is, meaning if there's any lag or performance issues.

Well, I guess there's only one way to find out... :)

the only useable place to install Omnisphere 's library is a SSD drive , all the other kind of drives sata or ide leads to frustration of the slow loading . SSD becomes cheaper and cheaper , so a dedicated drive cost you 100 bucks or so but will safe you of any stress

better move it to a SSD, i have it on a WD 1.5TB which is connected over USB3, its not that worse, but also not to fast. opening omnisphere and 300MB patches takes 15 seconds, but atleast it works if you dont have much omnisphere patches in your project.

    I beg to differ lol

the 500 Go and 1 To are still very expensive to my taste.
when one can get 250 / 275 Go SSD with quite reasonable price (which should be enough to store your STEAM folder and further expansions)
now you have 1 To HD 7200 rpm at 60€ and 2To at less than 100€
but with comparable size, the SSD are still very expensive

    I think he's right
the VST has to stay within the OS

you can move the STEAM folder on external drive, I did it several time, with no issues, but you want to keep in mind that you may want to expand your sounds and presets.
my Omnisphere steam folder (with keyscape, I have to mention) weight 190+ Go ...

i have trillian/omnisphere Steam folder along with the dll itself, it works quite good, well getting omni to recognize the STEAM folder after installing on the external HDD was quite some pain.

extra tip @ OP make the external HDD drive letter fixed, for example the HDD with the STEAM folder has here always the drive letter V:/

well SSD are still quite expensive still (if you are tight on budget) if you want to hold all your spectrasonics and kontakt stuff you would need a minimum of 500GB, because Keyscape+omnisphere+trillian is something like 170GB, remember SSD needs 20% free space or you will damage it in the long run.

I have the Spectra (with STEAM\Omni..,Keysc..,Tril.. inside) folder on the same external USB3 (unfortunately not SS- but) HD-Drive for a loong time now. The nature of the drive really shouldn't matter (except SSD causing a big smile on my face, being much faster). Meanwhile, I reinstalled the OS at least three times, which is obviously the same as moving the STEAM folder around..

When you re-install Omni (prog and dlls) on your main drive (you should, have to.. and why wouldn't you, as it doesn't take much space), just don't run it until the last update is properly "treated". On the first run it will kindly ask, where your STEAM folder resides.. then you re-scan. Never had any headaches.

Some are installing all the updates - I always just run the 1st installer and the last up.
    Windows 7-10 64 here.

Maybe I didn't make myself clear, sorry. I'm not talking about running Omnisphere from a USB drive. I mean I want to store Omnisphere and all it's updates on a USB drive instead of a bunch of DVD's. I just want to install Omnisphere to/on my main IDE drive from the USB drive. I know it comes as disk 1, disk 2, disk 3, etc. on the DVD's, so I just want to load the program and content included on the DVDs on the USB flash drive and install it from there. That way I can get rid of all the DVD's that are taking up too much room on my shelf.

This may sound weird, but did you try using symlinks?

So you have Omni on a physical media..? Of course you can put anything and everything on any flash memory like USB. Like ArticStorm said - get something at least 20-30% bigger. You have to use a utility program (like PowerISO) to exactly mirror your DVDs to ISO images and store those wherever you want. When you need them, you just load them as a "virtual" DVDs and use them like they'd be "real".

Word of caution - flash memory like USB sticks are not a 100% secure storage. So, for your precious stuff, you would still have to have some backup (like on some slow external drive..)

as a matter of fact, official Omnisphere 2 boxed version nowadays contains a little 64GB usb stick "card" instead of 8 DVDs as before,
last time I installed that on MacOS, it took roughly 20 hours,

    speaking of "preinstalled" portable thingy,
in MacOS you can link the target library (just throw alias in original location on system drive), it shall work as explained in further installation instructions, but I'm afraid you'd still need to somewhat install and authorize it on every rig you'd plan to use it,

    I guess that's a sufficient answer?

For the expansions which are installed with the .omnisphere file can I just copy paste all the contents of the user, patches and multis folder instead of installing them again? This .omnisphere installation takes ages.

  18. The stick it came with was a breeze to use, and yes, years ago when I tested Omnisphere it was a major undertaking with those 8 disks and it did take 2x forever to install.
