Still, even if you apply FX in mastering, just export in WAV FP and normalize levels in editor to stay below -1dBFS.
I can't seem to grasp the concept of using limiter in that instance.

Why would you want 1 stray transient (say, a pop on a mike or a scratchy patchcord) influence a whole mix? Why waste bit depth? to hear a record scratch in all of its dynamic lofi glory?
Did compressors/limiters fall out of party's favor, and now ̶f̶o̶r̶ ̶l̶e̶g̶s̶ ̶O̶c̶e̶a̶n̶i̶a̶ ̶h̶a̶s̶ ̶a̶l̶w̶a̶y̶s̶ Dynamic Range for the People?
It's quicker than rendering audio & loading it into an editor each time you tweak a knob?

Sure if that was just one instance in the whole track, then that can be edited out or limited in that particular track. No need to limit the whole mixdown for that error?

Why do that even? All that's necessary is to set the levels after exporting the track, no need to do that every time a parameter is changed. Even when you end up with +20dBFS, floating point won't distort it.

    vs
means if you apply fx you can exceed 0dBFS without a limiter and thus cause digital clipping and no post normalization can undo this.

Not if you export AND process in floating point format.
For FP, there's no 0dBFS ceiling.

Unless your plugs handle integer only (very few does), there's nothing to lose even when VU start to report red values.

Set levels after exporting? No wonder, I've been doing it wrong all along :(
But you're right, 32-bit float is the way to fly. Don't even need to think about levels. Watch me pull a rabbit out of that hat!

(what appears to be a clipping signal recorded @32 float, and magically fixed by converting to 16-bit :)

@Blorg Cool, or have it done all automatically with a press of a button.
This is what seems to be happening under the hood:
Peak scan -> normalize to 0 -> dither to 16bit

Yup. Such a (seemingly) simple, trivial thing to do, yet people spend pages discussing it, figuring out wat do with peak.
Make peak = 0dB (max sample value)? -6dB (leaving "headroom" for the mastering pro who doesn't quite understand how to turn down a fader/knob)? Enquiring minds want to know!

I bow my head in humbleness  and beg for forgiveness.

To be honest I never exported in FP and just didn't know that, sorry.

I just made +4.8dBFS 32bit FP export, no distortion to be heard, normalized it and zap! the wave looked completely different.
I love this forum and thank you very much.

Please don't dither. Thats the last step in mastering.

People are sending you stuff that's already downsampled, from (DAW native) 32-bit float to 24 or 16 int.
Either they dither when downsampling, or they don't. Arguably they should.[IMG]

you adding dither after the file has been downsampled may actually help (in the same way as adding noise/film grain/blur to a picture may help), but it's not something commonly done.

It will depend on the organizers and their requirements for this project. Already setting a tempo is a very bad idea that may not be very motivating. When it comes to choosing styles, it can be classical jazz, modern jazz, jazz fusion, rock jazz, funk jazz and many others. Once again, it's up to people who want to participate to make their choices. And I hope this album will have at least 8 tracks.

I would like to add that the impartiality of the jury is important. I'm against the fact that organizers be part of it. First choose a jury of at least 5 people who don't know each other and send the tracks for that they'll make their choice. That's the real challenge for organizing and implementing all of this. Bests guys
