Which sample Packs you use? Or do you sample from funk/soul records / Original drum breaks?

I really like Marco Polo s Pad Thai as well as Jake Ones Snare Jordsn Packs, illmind got good stuff as well.
Prefer those artists-dig-in-their-vaults packs a lot more than the average drum packs labeled dope. Drums /dusty /lo fi whatever, too much filler in there I think. Also , the 3 Artist packs I mentioned got handpicked original 70s drums , I guess sampled from vinyl in a high quality , perfect to use it and process on your own.

Whatup with that nottz /9th Wonder packs , any1 heard em yet?

Curious if some real beatheadz in here!

    Peace 1

When not using sample packs for drums, I sample only shitty 80s digital reggae for drums. Ironically, I find that old digital stuff has much more texture and much more hardhitting drums most of the time than boombap itself. On another note, if you like the marco polo stuff, check this pack https://mega.nz/#F!2cIwBRzJ!BfOF3vFKmmBYoqg9cQHGNw

I don't like the drum broker stuff really, from an engineering point it all sounds incredibly weak. Id much rather find my own vinyl samples or take higher quality recorded drums and degrade them myself. And yeah the guy above is spot on, those reggae cats usually had amazing engineers and the drums are sick. Go and listen to Lee Scratcj Perry. Even his latest album mix wise stands head and shoulders above any supposedly well mixed hip hop.

This reggea 80‘s drums idea is new to me, nice approach. Although those studio 1 and similar stuff , they got dope drums in there. Putting those thru a akai-s950 , mpc 60, sp-12 , eps-16 to get the right flavour would make them even more delicious

Excactly.. here are a few examples I just randomly came across on YT. There are blogs devoted to this stuff where you can snag wave files and full albums.

Loads and loads of open drumhits in digital reggae.

1&3 tune due to the fact it’s digital drums, I don’t feel that much, although the processing thru analog mixer /tapemachines makes them sound way more nice than dry, the 2nd is doing it for me, but it’s a natural drum set.
Funny, the processing way, a drummer in Jamaica , vintage mic, analog mixing desk, maybe compression, tape recorder , vinyl , sampler @ home...life is crazy, man
    Peace

I like the Nottz,9th and Jake One packs as well BUT i usually just spend a week or two chopping, processing and building my own kits.Battery is a GREAT tool for that.I've been doing it for years and have a TON of my own drums.

Having your own (drum) sound has always been cool as hell to me.I've always admired Premiere,Pete Rock,Diamond D,Large Pro, etc. for doing that.

i did that vinyl drumkit thing when i was younger, was pretty cool, nowadays i just chop breakbeats and layer them cause its super convenient and gives me the same sound

Agree 2! Chop cool drumbreak, layer with single drumsounds. Play with eq, take out the bass in drumbreak. Process the whole thing.
