I was pretty happy with the software and sold me hardware for $850 with four expansion cards

not I am having a mild case of remorse for letting a great bit of gear go :woot:

but I can't be bothered to get up from my computer anymore to flick through the patches...

as fast as they are to load

    Damn Kontakt libraries!! :snuffy:

I have the Roland XP-50 (which is one of the workstation versions of the JV-1080). I've had it since 1995 and I never had any of the expansions. I was always looking for a vst emu of it, and the closest I ever came to it was Cakewalk's Original Rapture (with all of the 3rd party presets). So, when the JV-1080 plugin was released I was over over over over joyed. There are some slight differences in the sound and synth controls, but nothing you should complain about. Now I have all of the sounds that I was without. My next step is to experiment with running them together and try some sound-layering.

So, are you saying that the JV 1080 VSTi from Roland is identical in sound quality to the hardware?

I understand, I have the original DX7 but never use it except as a midi controller. I prefer the DX7 from Arturia. It's pain in the *ss to record via Ableton.

What kept you from selecting/changing patches from your sequencer ? Cubase Pro sees my 1080 patches and the expansions too. Sonar too. If you have some librarian soft you can also tweak the heck out of your 1080,saves patches etc without moving an inch from the comp. If i recall correctly with Sonar you can even build custom editors to do this straight within Sonar.

It woudl be awesome , if we could rip the samples form the Cloud JV1080 as Multisamples so that we can use it for example in VPS Avenger :)
But there are sooooo many, if i do it alone it would takes a long time .
Like the idea ? Feel free to contact me , probably we can do a collective resampling and split the work :)

i had a 'compuphonic. or, in software ProMars. and it's lovely ( the software). the original may be the heaviest item i have ever owned. period. and as much as one loves such things it is so much more practical in plugin form and it sounds.. ace! however i have been trying out other emus. and.. they kind of all sound the same ) apart from the jupiter8. all good.. but similar. is it just me?
all those years i wanted an sh101...

No, not identical. It sounds much better, it actually sound identical to the XV-5080, which has a much better engine and higher quality samples.

Now all we need is a VST emulation of Yamaha MU100XG, then I can virtually be back when I started, with XG and JV :)

Nope is does not! The cloud emulation sounds far more digital and compressed. But it is a good emulation of the real thing. Roland did a pretty good job. The waiting is for the converted expansion cards...After releasing these goodies I probably sell my original JV1080.

That's what I tough " digital and compressed ". I can verify every day that emulations of hardware can/almost never sound as good as hardware synths. I've had a JV-1080 for a long time and I will never sell mine because it sound fantastic and is a real workhorse. I also have softsynths and comparing them side by side I noticed that in general a lot of softsynths lack depth and sound flatter, more two dimensional than most of my hardware synths.

Also if they are very good emulations, they will take up a lot of you CPU power and so, you will need for serious production a very powerful computer and that is not cheap + the price of all the plug-ins. There is a reason why hardware synths are expensive and they won't choke your computer. Now I work 50/50 between hardware and the best plug-ins I can buy. At one point, I was thinking of going totally hardware again if I could find a universal Editor/librarian that would work well. I used to use Unisyn by MOTU but they have discontinued it and that is a shame because it was a very fine piece of software. I tried MidiQuest but it's not very reliable on Mac's and need a lot of polishing but I hope they get there eventually.
