Man! LMAO!! If you only knew how many people sampled that Drum Intro! How ever...That song is so right on time for whats happening
in America. Why can't we just Impeach the President?! That would be the best Christmas.

 

I only knew about the song because of the sample . Impeachment, real campaign finance reform, congressional term limits, stricter lobbyist regulation, and elimination of the two party tyranny are all on my wish list.

I also own every James Brown album. But you're saying James Brown is Soul and not Funk.
I have to say Mr. Brown did indeed start his career making Soul/ RnB. But almost everyone i know agrees, he invented Funk. (Btw your statement suggests we can never switch musical styles?)
Maybe Mr. Clinton perfected it, but i don't think so. I think Mr. Allen Toussaint did (Lee Dorsey, The Meters)
At the very least Mr. Brown laid the groundwork for other artists to build on. But he has made some really dangerous Funky things, Black Ceasar is just one of them.

Funk music was already here in 1968 and had nothing to do with George Clinton, Bootsy or any other P-Funk artist. The stacks of singles and albums in my library are proof of that.
I could tell you i've been listening to Funk for a long time, i'm 45 years young. And visited my first Funk concert when i was 15 or so. Bla bla bla.
Maybe its better to say we will probably never agree on this Funk thing. Maybe it has to do with the fact that you and i love the music we grew up with and thats what we carry in our hearts.
As long you and i are beeing moved by what we love, who cares what Funk is? Lets leave it to the purists and the scholars.
And in the meantime this discussion can be a reminder that there is still a lot of music to be discovered.

@Downlo While i somewhat agree, one of the main arguments here is about who pinpointed the Funk as a movement rather than a musical genre. While musically it's gotta be JB, in which most people here incl. myself would agree, "politically" it is GC. My interpretation is he landed with a whole "cosmic theory" through the Mothership idea, which was enough to unite the people, who many of them had been under oppression, prejudice and/or suffering the effects of racism and human discrimination for quite sometime. You could even say it was a different kind of "hippie" movement in someway.
No matter what i think though, it is obvious that:
Mr. JB, while he indeed made songs with a loud political message, he never intended to unify "his" people under an multifaced umbrella which contained more than just entertaintment. That was GC's doing. So along with GC's being the one who named it "Funk" , this should justify why the OP claims he is the one true creator-godfather of the Funk.
