Classic story of the head of the US Patent office said "Everything that can be invented has been invented." He said that in 1899. This was before the radio, the television, the telephone, aircraft, spaceflight, Einstein's theory of relativity of the modern understanding of physics, the atmoic bomb, the large hadron collider, the electron microscope, the hubble telescope, cell phones, the internet, electric guitars, guitar amps, microphones, computers, synthesizers, etc.

It's highly unlikely than mankind would be speeding forward at an astounding rate for 10 millennium from cavemen to current society and then all of the sudden we're just going to stop here. Music has also been evolving constantly this whole time and it's never ever stopped. The likely that it would now is incredibly low. There's too many people dissatisfied with the current state of music, therefore a new genre/style/whatever is probably emerging right now. If you don't like what you hear make something new. Don't bring back a dead era, make a new one. And also appreciate the good of what is around now. There's been bad music always but it fades over time. I guarantee there was 1 or 2 cavemen drummers everyone dreaded to hear. But do we think of that now? No we just have the romantic image of cavemen sitting around a fire banging on things and making noises with there throats.

This might sound stupid for a lot of people but... has there to be progress? I'm fine with all the styles and music we have and we've had. Nothing "new" will born anytime soon anyway. Microtonal music? It wasn't certainly found or discovered today, people in different parts of the globe already used different scales and measurements for tones... new electronic genres? Sure, there's like one new style popping out every week I bet, but it's mostly a mash up of things we already know, it's a mixture of ideas and inspiration: nothing intrinsically new (which doesn't mean it's bad).

Good tip, but go tell that to all the people wanting to emulate 70s, 80s, 90s, etc and all the goblins that want to make money taking advantage of this fact

There is one for me that caught my attention recently. I don't know what its called but it's in ambient music with female voice narrative. The result it brings is some sort of meditative to listener.

Hehe @Backtired disagree. But no offense, I've been seeing the same @Piano Piano, @Backtired. On one side I'm happy about it, but on the other side, I'm worried. It's good to see everyone in the future (regardless level of knowledge in music), can make music. Amper Music might still on beta and the result may not be as good as production quality. I'll be no surprise when one day it does, generating track as simple as giving instructions, and eventually give us a mastered track. I'm worried because how would music writer/engineer make living in the future, if everythings AI-ed and everyone can make music? Maybe that should be explored

We create AI to simulate us, most of the time.

There is plenty of unexplored stuff in pop music.

I've yet to hear a pop song with never repeating rhythm (like gamelan).

In 50 years computers would be able to compose, perform, mix and master better music than Beethoven or Bach with a click of a button. It's possible even now to make generic algorithmic music based on styles.

 

I like that. Make sense. @Backtired @23322332 I just realized that AI weaknesses is creativity. Ours is immense. Things about AI will take the future is not relevant anymore (imho). Just true for collaborations. imho.

 

There is so much in music that has not been discovered yet. Things that have not even been IMAGINED YET !

Decades ago in the siggraph guerilla studio I experimented with "technology" that is currently driving products marketed under the TIME EXILE name, and REAKTOR names - they were on the cutting edge - yet we use them now 30 years later - as if they are new.

I see more sonic automation triggered by not only human input - but we can also create music using biofeedback (for decades now). We can take that farther and use non-traditional triggers for music automation. Inception, conception, life, death - hell even extrasensory readings can be used to create music. Or the energy generated by ... well.. you see... many options...

We still have unlimited avenues to explore in experimental music.

 

Hopefully more than what humans brought lately. Wouldn't take much.

Then another few zillion, getting better with each one. Doesn't eat sleep or poop, just composes. Practice makes perfect. Gotta find someone to listen to it all, but humans face the same problem
