Is there anything in the music world that hasn't been explored yet?

I think we're at the last station and nothing revolutionary, pioneering or innovative can be introduced. I would name this era, the styles' era or mixing era. In this era you're dealing with fashions and trends coming and going without adding new fundamental concepts to the music world.

    What do you think?

    Yes.

    Well, what?

The trick, Mr. Potter, is knowing what the next thing is and being ahead of the curve.

Okay, then what (and when) would you say was the last new fundamental concept added to the music world?

In light of the lack of anything truly revolutionary in the past thirty years, I am inclined to agree. In regard to Western music over the last century you could easily distinguish music from the 1940's with Big Band swing, the 1950's introduced Rock 'n' Roll, the 60's was an eclectic, free era that liberated all kinds of musicians who then took those freedoms into the 1970's and began much of what we have with us still today. The last new forms of popular music are dominated by Rap, Hip Hop and anything that comes under the general term of 'electronic dance music' but these are now decades old and show little sign of evolving into anything startlingly different from the norm. And should the above mentioned microtonal music become a ubiquitous form of expression, I shall have my ear drums removed.

I would say Rap. Never before did a song not have a singer.

All of these advancements in music were usually accompanied by some new types of instruments, amplifiers, FX pedals/outboard gear, etc. When last did we have any new kinds of instruments/FX? Was it Autotune? :winker:

    it's a bit like looking at God's creation and be like " that's all you've got ?!! "

inspiration is everywhere, mais si je commence à parler français, et que tu captes rien, on va vite être dans la merde, so 確かにあるかもしれない είναι ως επί το πλείστον θέμα ανοιχτής σκέψης

Music will never stop adapting. If in 20 years someone shows you the music being made, I bet you'll be blown away. I think us (the past) would never even comprehend the fundamentals of future music, similar to showing Skrillex to The Beatles back in their heyday.

For now just worry about making the best music you can make. And if you don't see that innovation that you wish for in music, go and make it happen yourself. In the modern "edm" world at east, the most prolific artists are those who did just that, explored something entirely new that no one before has.

So yes, I think that there is plenty in the music world left to be explored. It may not seem like it at the time, but I have confidence in it.

    ah the past..
i wonder what "music" do flowers listen to :keys: :

i also have a feeling that in the future classical music will return & be more popular :keys: :

  18. I think the answer is unknowable unless you discover Terpsichore for yourself, instead of copying somebody else's muse.

    The new is always shocking.

    it's called postmodernism.
it's just the philosophy de jour. music isn't a philosophy. it's something you feel. it has infinite mutability.
    your statement is pessimism.
there is nothing new under the sun. but there are endless permutations. more things in heaven and earth etc...

Rapers aren't singers and singers aren't rappers. But rappers and singers are both vocalists.

The reason I asked the question was that I just don't buy the premise that there will be nothing else new, or even that we're stuck in a rut right now. Rap seemed new, but in reality, it's made up of components that were already around. The same goes for just about anything; broken down into its constituent parts it doesn't seem all that new anymore. This is because humans are social* animals that are highly adaptable and are able to pass information from one another by way culture, which has become increasingly complex since our very earliest ancestors were walking the Earth some 120,000 years ago. Music has been around for nearly as long. Do you think they ever expected to hear rap music?

    * Sociability is our defining aspect, not intelligence. A quick and dirty (and poor) explaination: Some of us are intelligent, but as an adaptation, it is no more important than paranoia, perhaps even less so. After all, it was our paranoid ancestors who were able to survive better because they were wary of everything. But our species has gone through several major climate changes (at one point dropping to an estimated 10,000 breeding pairs), and so intelligence persists because during those events problems had to be solved or you would die. Also, here is a neat graph I won't explain.
