Which CPU models? Will the 8.1 also receive an update?

5-30% performance hit to patch it. I don't really need that to be fixed - don't care. Certainly not worth a 5-30% performance hit!

If it becomes an issue I am sure there will be large class action lawsuits and recalls to replace them. Intel will have to make good on their processors or they will lose A LOT of business and fold

So, to fix the issue, do you think that they will release a WINDOWS hotfix patch e.g. "KBxxxxxx"? If so, maybe we could just uninstall the patch. Or, maybe someone will write a batch file so that WIN never applies the fix.

Audio computers should be run offline, so is it really a problem for us?

If I ever go online with my main audio computer, I use a version of Linux which is installed on a very fast USB memory stick, or I just use my Android tablet.

And I also have an old beaten up laptop for downloading and stuff.

I learned long ago to separate everything out :)

What about Pinnacle Ridge? ;) It is said to use GF 12nm LPP (leading performance node) compared to Raven Ridge's (I meant summit ridge's :D somehow it didn't save edit :() "mobile" 14LP (low power node) So there could be some much needed clock improvements and minor IPC improvements. It would also be quite cheap upgrade path.

Yes it is a very good point to my next upgrade >>>im waiting to see what happens in this next month >>>ive been reading on the Pinnacle Ridge... i personally have been an Intel user for most of my musical career untill this past year building the Ryzen 1800x... Ryzen has gottin alot of flac from users but i love mine not had any issues with it at all... I built it on an MSI board loaded with a good GPU, PCI SSD's and 32gb of memory ... it replaced my intel setup with ease for half the cost ;)

  17. Oh I can definitely hear a class action lawsuit rustling in the undergrowth.

  20. OK. The issue is hardware related irrelevant of the OS.

I can explain the Windows issue. The kernel, the innermost part of the OS, is supposed to run in a sealed-off, separate part of the architecture that can’t be got at or compromised in any way. There’s a flaw in an entire generation of Intel processors that allows a hostile actor to get into the kernel memory space. There’s indications that some ARM chips are going to get some kind of patch too. AMD processors are thought not to be affected.

A proposed patch in the software of the kernel is thought to mitigate the issue. The performance hit comes everywhere code in user space make an OS call to the Kernel. Software that makes many calls into the kernel, for example when accessing files or the network will be hit most. Software that overwhelmingly relies on raw cpu performance such as audio ‘might’ be affected less than software such as say databases. There may be an issue with software that makes extended use of virtual memory access.

It looks like M$ is putting out a fix in a near-horizon patch Tuesday whether you want it or not. As a vulnerability, it exposes a computer to the root-kit from hell as it would exist within the kernel space and become effectively untouchable and undetectable. So, you can get patched or you run the risk of the slags getting you running Bitcoin miners for them.
