Decided to consolidate a couple of old boxen into one, slightly zippier box. Tossed in all the memory & HDs, fired it up, & "... Installing devices ... 65% complete ..." took about a minute to get to the login screen.
    Bah!

It booted from the "new" drive (pulled from a totally different mobo/different CPU), installed all the drivers (other than GPU); everything works just as I left it ~a month ago. I checked to see if Win (8.1) was activated, of course it wasn't (due to being a legit copy), but ...who knew moving to a new box was this simple?

Yes I've been using system backups and it's a real time saver. On the other hand, when you install everything new, you got a fresh system, witch is not bad, generally faster.

  5. I can remember when getting a new mobo meant reinstalling Digital Research's GEM. I can remeber the world before WIndows. I still have nightmares about Windows 2.0.

It always works when you transplant, and windows should not need activating, however, you will only get generic motherboard drivers, so the correct ones need to be updated.
