I recently impulse-bought the CM mag issue with Tone2 Warmverb in it based on some KVR threads talking about how it's the full version, and Warmverb/MultiFX is good for pads/drones, which is an area of sound design I'm a bit of a novice.

Thing is, I'm a little hesitant to install it due to the things R2R said about Tone2. I have hardly any pirated stuff on my main system, but I do have a couple Fabfilter plugs, and I remembered reading that people with FF cracks could get boned by the Tone2 protection.

Basically - am I taking a risk in installing this?

 

Dunno about r2r, but AiR did dedicated installer with photos of that guy from tone2 and wrote an explaining article about how tone2 protection works. AFAIK nothing has changed since that times. But i can be wrong. Search Gladiator from AiR and read the whole thing.

Certainly yes. Because it's acting like malware. If today everything is fine, noone can guarantee that few days later it will not make your system bsod on startup. Just make a backup of your system before installing tone2 stuff.

Hi @Cav. Take a snapshot of your computer before installing it, then if it does the nasty, you can do a system restore to put it back the way it was!

what OS are you on ?

I have warmverb ( on mac - and unfortunately, the version I have i's only 32 bit ), i absolutely love this plug which is - for sure not subtile - but great from what you expect of it : an FX verb / delay..

the only thing you're at risk of, imo, is that if not installed properly, there's a chance it will mess up with other tone2 stuff ( it happened to me for another product )

otherwise, I doubt that this thing will connect you to the police, call the FBI and time-bomb your hard-drive...

why don't you give D.Sches Tantra a try ? to me, it's quite similar in the possibilities ..

it can be pretty nasty with its protections... but if you are only installing ONE plug to try it out..and it's legit anyway
it's probably ok... I was "demo-ing" several when I got the "nasty"..

but it was enough to turn me off for good too.... have not dipped back into the world of Tone2 since

 

Cav Emp I never had problem using cracked Tone2 plugins. But if you are worried, there are so many good effects for pads/drones.

Example:Valhalla DSP ValhallaVintageVerb, PSPaudioware PSP 608 MultiDelay, etc ...

 

I've not used Tone2 for a long time because of it's protections. They play tricks like using one plug to detect the crack in another. The worst that ever happened was the plugs just stopped working, but I've heard of worse. U-he plugs are another troublesome deal when using cracks. U-he use long running timebombs that let you get so far into using the plug, that when it finally dies on you, you are so invested into it's use the only way out is to buy.

So take a chance if you want, but there's nothing in Tone2 you can't easily get elsewhere. U-he is a cut above the average.

 

@DanielFaraday right... see this is the kind of stuff I'd heard. The type of stuff that scares me away from installing the legit copy of WarmverbCM

Well, all my u-he stuff is legit. Practically everything on my computer is legit. The only cracked plugs that I can think of, off the top of my head, are like 2 or 3 Fabfilter ones that I haven't bought yet. But there have been other cracked plugs on there that I've later bought and replaced with true license files/serials/etc. I don't have any Tone2 plugs installed, so really my biggest concern was that I'd read some rumor about how Tone2 (for some stupid reason) detected the use of cracked FF stuff and it gave someone a bunch of trouble. I'm pretty conscientious about keeping my machine as "legit" as possible but sometimes you just gotta weigh whether to pay over $150 for a de-esser or wait until someone puts it on KVR for 2/3 of that.

I guess the verdict is: however small the actual risk is, there's no point in potentially jeopardizing a $1000+ machine with thousands of dollars of legitimate software on it, just to justify a $5 computer mag purchase. Maybe I'll install it on my laptop, which has no cracks at all and only a portion of the plugs I own
