    - Get 3DS Max and make a box
    - Get Photoshop or Illustrator and do Your Artwork
    - Back to 3DS Max and map the box with the "texture" you made in photoshop or Illustrator
    - Render it.

    ...or thousands of other variations

Isn't it a bit of an overkill to use max for generating a box?
If you are used to 3ds max, no problem, otherwise it has a quite steep learning curve when it comes to mapping, lighting, shadowmapping, and rendering if the result should look realistic.

Boxshot 3D (and lookalikes) is easy to use for beginners and has a HD footprint of some Megabytes while 3ds max has Gigabytes.
To achieve the same results taking a beginner 10 minutes in boxshot will take the same person a week in max. At least.

Of course max is a universal 3D package but is ist worth the effort for a box ;)

Me as well. I started when it was a DOS software back then at the beginning of the 1990ies. 3D studio Version 2 or 3? I loved it ever since.
But seriously, one can't accuse 3ds max to be easy

I don`t remember what version it was, but it run on the Atari, and to render something not to complicated it took hours .

It was not very complicated back then, but the more recent versions are a nightmare to master. (probably that fore they added "MAX" in the name :hahaha: )
