Theres something sweet about outboard samplers, I run a yamaha a4000 with an akai s5000 and a akai s01 modded with gotek. Although i admit they are not as quick to use as a software synth i still love to make breaks, and even basic synth bass's using the yamaha osc, filters and fx and then i record them in and edit them further in my DAW using kontakt. Best of both worlds.

I used to have S950 back in the day and it's a lovely sounding sampler with really interesting sounding time stretching and converters, but its filter is not so nice. If they put a resonant filter in it, it would be really good! Nowadays I'm using fully expanded S3200 and its filter sounds quite good. The filter on the additional board especially. It's also easier to edit. I love it for drums and vocals, even basslines. Still very useful machine. S950, too, without a doubt! I made whole songs with it and Korg Wavestation!

The filter was bloody awful.... :) you could get a nicer sound by slowly sticking blutack to your tweeter....

For me its not just about the sounds, it also encourages me to use a different technique when creating a song. I make decisions that are more final and it all comes together in a different way then if im using plugins. Only problem is i find i need to dedicate a day/more time to this type of production.

The worrisome part is that there's still nothing like E-MU Z-plane filters anywhere in VST to be found. Except the a bit buggy and rather old Emulator X3 that I still use btw. They're all busy emulating Juno-106....

p.s. Which I owned and found more sterile sounding than my Juno-60 anyway. Really boring synths, both of them. Very constricted. One and a half trick ponies. I don't get the hype around it at all.

These days I find myself sampling the Juno into A5000 and mangling the hell out of it. That's more like it. Then it goes into the pedals. Want to be creative? Sound different?
