FabFilter Pro-L 2, a major update to the Pro-L limiter plug-in, is now available.

With four brand-new limiting algorithms, a new true peak limiting mode, extensive standards-compliant loudness metering, surround support and many other new features, Pro-L 2 has been improved in every way while still remaining the benchmark of simplicity and effectiveness in limiters, say FabFilter.

New limiting algorithms

FabFilter Pro-L 2 introduces four new limiting algorithms. Modern is the new 'best for all' algorithm that produces even better results than the Transparent and Allround algorithms from version 1. Aggressive is great for maximum loudness, well suited for EDM or rock music. Bus has been designed specifically for drums and limiting of individual tracks, while Safe's goal is not maximum loudness, but to avoid distortion at all times.

True peak limiting and loudness metering

The new true peak limiting feature in FabFilter Pro-L 2 makes it extremely easy to hit a maximum true peak target. Just set the output level to the desired value, enable True Peak Limiting and that's it. Combined with improved true peak metering and extensive loudness metering that's compliant with the EBU R128, ITU-R BS.1770-4and ATSC A/85 standards, Pro-L 2 is the perfect fit for any loudness normalization job.

Advanced processing

Complete support for surround audio with flexible channel linking makes FabFilter Pro-L 2 much more versatile in multi-channel scenarios, while the sound quality is even higher than before with up to 32x linear-phase oversampling. New features like a DC offset filter, external side chain triggering for stem mastering and a Unity Gain option ensure that Pro-L 2 is the solution to any mastering challenge.

Interface enhancements

The unique real-time level display is now even more effective with new innovative display modes, including an Infinite mode that shows all audio for an entire session. Moments of significant gain reduction are highlighted with peak labels to give additional insight in the limiting process. Last but not least, the interface has been carefully redesigned to be aesthetically pleasing with a perfectly optimized workflow.

A fine GUI as usual.​

 

As a fan of highest quality compression and superloud but clean transparent hard clipping with maximum oversampling and true-peak intersample limiting after and some ceiling such as -0.3 dB or even lower , I should reconsider this plugin.

FabFilter - Not in hurry of releasing tonnes of plugins. They only release the perfect product. Their every single plugin is great.

Nice, one of my 2 go-to limiters. Looking forward to this.

 

fabfilter is really the king of the guis. So much information on the screen and still it looks so easy, unexcited and logical. Like allways a must have. And than it probably sounds even better than proL ....

As I remember, the first requested features were: improve oversampling quality (as it gives worse results than some top algos) and increase oversampling factor (we see up to 32x oversampling),as well as include true-peak limiting.

Release notes will show what's new in version 2, but here what I noticed:
- 4 new modes added (Aggressive, Modern, Bus, Safe), in total there are 8 modes now,
- extended linear-phase oversampling (now includes 8x, 16x, 32x), also 2x and 4x oversampling were improved as it were highly requested by many users,
- added true-peak limiting, which can be used with or even without oversampling,
- linking TRANSIENTS+RELEASE parameters for CHANNEL LINKING section, as well as this section has been expanded by other new features, and Channel Linking for Surround,
- added external sidechain triggering for stem mastering, as well as for mixing tasks,
- added DC offset filter,
- new options for metering/analysis, reference/target levels (CD, streaming, EBU R128, other standards etc.), custom target level can be set as well,
- overall improved and extended metering/analysis section (e.g. totally new loudness metering section),
- added Unity Gain - 1:1 (processed vs original on same volume level for comparison and for further gain correction),
- added Audition Limiting - listen to "what distorts/affected/limited only" (a la Delta mode, difference between processed and original),
- surround support up to 7.1.2 Dolby Atmos,
- improved GUI for better workflow,
- improved/enhanced sound engine
- ...and some more stuff, improvements, enhancements and fixes..

It's out!

 

Pro L was already to me one of the finest unobtrusive limiter that I had heard, and now this new version, Pro L2, seems to put the older iteration to pasture. Will wonders ever cease?

I think a lot of companies have to learn how to take care of legit users.

 

I hated ProL 1 because of small amount of oversampling and no true peak limiting, and some other stuff like delta mode, unity gain. Now it is completely a much better tool, not a superadvanced pro limiter of 2000s. A weapon tool number one in a row with O8 , Limitless, and other high quality top limiters.

 

Best limiter money can buy.

These 2 crack me up.. Mastering engineers are the snake oil salesmen of the audio engineering world.

 

Agreed, lol...Actually, not only the audio engineering field, but also the general audio related universe, is 99,9% made snake oil salesman and their respective junkies, specially when tubes or plugins (or a combination of both) are involved...It's one of the last remaining business fields where you can freely con people and not only get away with it, but get praised for it...
