which version though, pro or ultimate? 32 or 64 bit? with compatibility in mind, like cubase 5...

Switch to Windows 10 when windows 7 gets obsolete. By that time, windows 10 will be rock solid and maybe you have new hardware which works better with windows 10.
Tabs are coming to windows 10. Much requested by users and much ignored by microsoft is now being taken care of.

The better question is why iPhone 9 doesn't exist. Or why FL studio 13 to 19 doesn't exist.

Windows 9 exists if only just on paper, being a cancelled MS project of a modified embedded win8.1 pro intended for OEM use.
And of course with win9 not being ever released or mentioned officially, the sequence of 7,8,9 is now Seven Ate Ten:bleh::rofl:

A consumer Os that needs so many tweaks to simply perform as intended, can never be classified as rock solid my friend , at least imho.
I find more likely a newer OS to have replaced the (failed) win10 by the time win7 becomes obsolete. If not, most of the serious windows 7 users will move to heavily modified versions of win10, which by all means are non legit versions.

I highly doubt that, past 3 years I have noticed absolutely no improvement in any core functionality issues

Well, that's your personal problem. Everytime I try latest Redstone, I find it better than previous one in functionality and stability. Worst part is it could never become fast like windows 7. The same way windows 7 can never as fast as winXP.

You don't need to tweak heavily if you have a decent machine. Most pro producers and engineers do have capable machine. Even non pros who use win10 are spread across youtube.

nice so read your statements... for me best control is with win7---- i have a custom one, where everything (files etc) were deleted what i dont need for making music.
with some hardware tweaks and some driver coding for asio, i have more than "double" speed at the esi maya.... i dont need it , but hey bottleneck is bottleneck....
i got skulltrail i7 CPUs all in all around 30 GHz pure power for ableton.

i dont need any stuff like firewalls etc.
in my task i got 72 processes in my ram...

actually if there is a virus or stuff like that than the overall processes are 72+! :) simple .. (do you know a virus which is not found in the process tab - i guess no)

i got ableton 9 x64, with some self coded vsts and some jbridge....
actually the wizoo verb is bridged, and having bridges the venguard. i got some test projectfiles, with contains 2 takt midi,
1 track has around 20 processors in it.
now i copy the track some hundert times, than testing under pressure.... ableton just uses 43% cpu....
so copy some more tracks, and so on.

my system is my real treasure, with that win7 version my daw is really tanky for the next 20 years...

and can have simple 5000 + tracks midi with 20 processes...

so i think this is enough performance space for my for lifetime. now there are 30-50tb SSD on the market, that is nice.
    for my win7 system i use a m2 SSD, with 500gig
the SSD for datas got a copy all week as backup on the second ssd, with i got out of my hardware after backup.

it took me 15 years to got this machine now, and this should work up to 10 years +

Sounds like a pretty decent setup. Did your version of Win7 come pre-customised or did you customize it from scratch?
I fancied a change recently and downloaded (Windows 10 X64 Enterprise 2016 LTSB en-US July 2017 {Gen2}) and added a few customizations myself. So far it is definitely lighter and faster than my previous Win7 installs. I'm using it for music only and have turned off all things internet related.
I reckon we all have different needs and whatever suits the individual and their machine is what is right for them no matter the Operating system. I'm also delving into the wonders of linux mint and Ubuntu Mate for my general internet/Office type stuff and find it a lot more of a flexible and secure system in that respect but it's a slightly different learning curve. Anyway Cudos mate

With all the respect, this is just a superficial opinion. You either tweak the system as best possible or don't bother at all. In the studio, we don't build decent machines just for the os to suck our resources, no matter how powerful mis the pc. We build them to run our softies and as fast as possible within our budget.
You got me here man, i don't even understand what this means or how could it be connected to the op.

You either have skulltrail from 2008,the intel D5400XS a dual cpu mobo which uses either Core 2 QX 9775 or XeonDP cpus, or skulltrail nuc which is a single cpu slot mini pc with a consumer 6th gen quad core i7 cpu maximum.
Using plural(cpus) means you have 2 cpus which is the first system and that system doesn't have an m2 slot. It doesn't even have SATA 6gbps lol. Its a Sata II (3gbps) board.
Well i am all for win 7 too, but i am trying to understand so help me if you please.
Your tweaked win 7 has 72 processes in ram and my (not studio) gaming win7 pc with razer ornata, logitech g403, xbox controller, steam, origin, uplay, antivirus, firewall and no tweaks whatsoever apart from minimum UAC has 75?
I wonder what kind of tweaking is this.
What are these mysterious processors ?
Please by all means, i will pay you 20 bucks to see a video of this with sound if possible.
Errr... last time i checked a couple of months ago, a 50tb ssd costs 20.000 dlrs. When exactly is it you will be upgrading? Hmm...perhaps i got it all wrong... Is your last name Google?

    Sorry but,:wtf:
Overall i haven't read so much science fiction all in one post for a long time. For what it's worth i'd love to smoke what you smoking man, pass it on plz.:mates:

The only reason I am getting Win 10 is because Win 7 doesn't officially support 8700K's. I'm going to get the enterprise "KMS" version. The enterprise version doesn't have all the intrusive crap or and doesn't force updates, but unlike LTSB the option to update is there.

What's the big deal about updates, nobody's really spying on you? Here's the latest gem from Microsoft & pals: https://www.extremetech.com/computi...ws-10-systems-without-permission-notification

Many people are using windows 10. SeamlessR, Sadowick, or any ableton/fl user I see today on youtube uses windows 10. I understand that win7 is lighter than win10 just like XP is lighter than win7. Time will come when support from seven will be removed. And we must be prepared for that. Yeah but that time is far away. So I vote for windows 7 for now. But I won't hesitate switching to windows 10.

So help me out man, what are all these windows 7 drivers on every x370 motherboard ? Oh i know, un-official support on the official support page... :bleh:
Dude, how can a hardware manufacturer not support 50 % of the users out there who prefer Win7? Win10 with almost 30% two years after release has already lost the battle. Whatever Ms was trying to pull off, it didn't work. And now they 're trying to scare noobs so they can data-mine their pcs, and you believe them ? Sheesh...

And this post about HP. So all these ppl didn't mind Ms telemetry collecting their precious data constantly, HP is the devil right? How hypocritic. EDIT: Hypocritic for those peeps , not for you of course, just so i am not misunderstood :)

The only reason to go Win10 is to be in need of a special tech feature like...hmmm... hold on... one sec... errr... oh blimey, i can't think of anything useful:rofl:
Finally for the lovers of square win95 oops, eer, sorry win10 i mean, the only build of Win10 which so far has proven to be as solid as it gets, is Windows 10 Enterprise 2016 LTSB x64 v2 lite.
    Look around :D

As much as my friend Sinewave defends XP ( i think its solid too btw) it doesn't support many of the latest technologies. Windows 7 has support for almost everything so far. When the time comes and compatibility is no longer avail, we will all upgrade, hopefully to a better than win10 os. If not, the w10 build i mentioned previously, works so dam fine that i am tempted to try a partition on my main machine.

I am actually in the process of shopping a new PC. I was suggested a Intel Core i7-7700 Kaby Lake 4x3.60GHz/8x4.20GHz/HD630/8M on an ASUS Strix Z270H-G.

I'm not sure if it is a good choice for an audio dedicated PC. The vendor who suggested that beast is more on the "Gamer"side. Anyway, this new processor ONLY runs Win 10, he says. I never touched Win10 before and I hated Win 8
