It's important what other user said. The only important component that you may need is the media framework pack (or something like that) and it's small and easy to install.

I'm trying the RS3 Pro version and you can end with an equivalent to LTSB N but man, quite a task to do.
Also, you can find in warez sites updated distributions of LTSB N editions.

For the same reason MPEG3 doesn't exist... (MP3 is MPEG1 audio layer III).

Just to be clear, I was joking about people overlooking Windows 8 when in fact Windows 9 actually literally does not exist and never has. But I don't think your MPEG statements are accurate. MPEG-3 actually did exist. Windows 10 versus Windows 9 is solely a marketing choice.

I have an M4800 as well with similar specs. I switched to Server 2016 and it is lightning fast as many extraneous services and features are not installed by default. I can't recommend Server 2016 more highly. I run S1, Live 9, Max etc..with rock solid stability and speed. I also use it for a ton of steam games too!

But the comparison could be valid, of course we'll never know... Windows versions aren't exactly standards.. quite the opposite.

MPEG3 did begin but it was discarded and integrated into MPEG2 because first HDTV broadcasts using cable had enough bandwidth to handle 720p/1080i with MPEG2. Later efforts were invested in MPEG4 (H263, and so on).

Now picture post-Windows 8 Microsoft trying very hard to sell Windows Phones and RTs. They could have been working in a more-mobile-less-start-menu-than-ever metro-modern-ui Windows 9.

Until they lost the mobile OS war so dramatically that they took two steps back with Windows 10.

I suggest Windows 11 and you tell us about how buggy and great it is when you lose months tinkering with it for no reason at all while there are OSes that work without any problems [W7, OSX 10.10].

 

Good simple tweak is to set the DAW base priority to Above Normal

Install the Enterprise LTSB and then enter Audit mode, setup and disable all the crap in GPEDIT
then clone that image so you have a complete CLEAN and NO BS install base.

Group Policy Editor you need to learn it and use it to disable anything you wish in Windows 10.

Windows 10 is not free and was always NOT FREE. As is Intel with the Minix OS running on the Boards along with the EMT portion on the CPU

You can not even boot an Intel CPU without that hidden OS running!!!

This is why YOU RUN EVERYTHING OFF LINE.

Right now as of this moment the NSA or any Gov agency with Intel's private key can login to YOUR I7 PC even if the PC is offline since the Minix OS portion is still running when the computer is off


I warned people about this years ago, a future used for "Enterprise" or more like GOVERNMENT SHELL Corporations was going to pushed on even regular desktops

Well Intel has had this since the V PRO days!!! and one complained that this is a serious breach of security

That Minix OS is independent of your OS, it runs it's own TCPIP stack on your NIC and anyone with Intel's key can log in and tap your ram while you recording audio without you realizing

The Media is trying to keep this under control, by pushing out fake shootings on a daily basis which anyone with a 10 year old brain can figure out it's a stupid moronic Drill sold as news.

Understand this Intel Fiasco can not be disabled it is hardware based and anyone running I7's watch out as in the future your Desktop or Laptop is going to be owned and you will not even realize it.

Best thing to do is do what I do Run all Applications OFFLINE ( Virtual Network Card) and Power down your Desktop from the MAINS.

 

Use windows 7 until support ends and don't hesitate to move on to windows 10. I like them both. Windows 10 got something I like that I can't find in win 7 and vice verca. My production doesn't depend on an OS. Same goes for a DAW. I like cubase, Ableton, Bitwig, FL, and Reaper. But Reaper's cheap and fully functional, so I use it.

Such long post just to tell people they should buy an AMD processor without Intel ME? ;)

I'll stay with W7 and XP for music until they start to rot [computers]. I don't feel any need to "upgrade" anything when it all works nicely and my hardware is SCSI, Firewire and PCI based. These days you can get some really nice hardware that uses "obsolete" connections for really cheap from stupid hipsters who think using Thunderbolt [and W10 for that matter] will make their music sound better, or make them more productive/creative.

I'm using Debian Linux 9.2 for everyday tasks, XP for older programs and SCSI hardware, W7 for more modern software and to drive the TC Firewire audio interface. I have OS-X 10.12, too for music, but it's just being used for testing programs and plugins. Loads of clients are using it, so I have to have it and I like it much better than Windows, but corporations are getting on my nerves and I'm looking forward to using Linux for everything at some point. We'll see what happens.

My prediction is that Microsoft is going to be much less relevant for computing in the future, Apple will get ruined and Linux will get much more usage, but one should take in account that people are moving to smaller factor PCs, phones and tablets. I can't blame them and I like smaller platforms myself. I just wish smaller platforms were more compatible with audio hardware.

Still, you can produce music these days with a little hardware and an iPad. I *hope* this trend continues, actually. I'm fed up with mousing around...

People still make music with Ataris and old Cubase, Roland MC-500s, MC-80s, Yamaha RM-70s and RM1x... everything goes. We're musicians for fuck's sake, not system administrators!

Having said that, the *only reason* to upgrade your OS is Internet security, nothing else. If you're using any of the Linux distributions for your Internet then you're covered and I wholeheartedly recommend it to everyone!

Choosing an OS *for music* is like choosing a car you use to go to the open market with. You won't choose a 4WD or a Ferrari for that, will you? Not saying that W10 is a Ferrari, on the contrary...

 

I try to switch back to win7 but i find windows 10 pro much faster and i dont get a of lot bugs. i manually disable windows 10 services like background intelligent transfer and superfetch. my win10 run without any problem and fall creators update made the os faster. I think is not about OS is about creating music any good DAW and creativity are the most important things of music.

 

Loving W10ltsb. 100% rock solid. And 7 just feels so backwards by comparison now. I'd never go back to it on my music partition. It's a keeper.

 

I have not touched my Windows 10 Enterprise install in years now using the Group Policy template that I made for myself with all the crap turned off.

There is also the Services batch disable tool that I and many others have done for Windows 10 ( 20+ useless services running)


By the way for the person who thinks I am pushing people to AMD that is false as AMD also has this hidden Remote feature on their new CPU's ( Older FX CPU's are okay)

Windows 7 is a very good OS , however the GUI was kind of boring so you need to add another shell ( hundreds of them available for free). It is also getting old but like XP ( which I still run on a rack PC for live guitar FX) will be very useful in the future as a small box install.

 

One question in real life OS performance does W10 run faster and smoother than than W7 ?
I don't care about how it looks I spend most of my time into a daw or graphic apps, don't use internet unless I am using fusion 360
Used both osx and windows for music production, but tbh I found windows better (unless you use Logic), many more plugins and once you are inside a daw in my case ableton and S1 don't see any big difference in workflow.

 

Background Intelligent Transfer is used by Windows Update. You would probably like that one to be on if your W10 is online.
Superfetch service is not good and not needed for your SSD, so it's good to disable it.

Interesting enough, when I install my beloved Debian it usually only needs 5 minutes to configure it, if that.

 

I don't see how so for the GUI ... cosmetically speaking win10 looks flat, uninspiring and square. A bit like a polished version of win95, it looks more like Android than Windows lol. It responds better than win7 to multi-touch controllers alright. Other than that, win10 IS SLOWER than win7 in all processes but the startup. Measured by myself and colleagues with the same projects on the same machines win7 manages about 3-5% more juice out of your cpu/ram than win10 LTSB. Stranger even is (since win10 supposedly has a better hd implementation) win7 "taxes" your hds less.
I haven't yet benchmarked the lite version of Win10LTSB, now on v2. It looks promising, as background processes have been reduced to minimum, and it seems as clean as it can be.
To me personally win10 still feels like a work in progress. The 2 different control panels seem to contradict one each other instead of compliment each other. It holds one foot in the future and one foot in the past. All Ms introduced with it was spyware and bloatware. As digital content creators, we need a new and faster FS, better graphics/video and sound implementation from the get go. Instead we got telemetry and a billion group policies. Oh and DX12 so your games run slower too lol.
