one of my macbook pro's got stolen and i'm getting a new one through insurance, now i wanna give this baby some steroids and i wanna know whether you think it'll be nice and fast and reliable for music production.

    here's the list:

MacBook Pro 15-inch Hi-Res Antiglare Widescreen Display
2.7GHz Quad-core Intel Core i7, Turbo Boost up to 3.7GHz (for what's it's worth anyway)
Other World Computing (OCW) 16GB 1600MHz DDR3L SDRAM
2x Other World Computing (OCW) EXTREME Pro 6G SSD 480GB (in the fastest raid setting, yes i know it'll fuck up if one fails, yes i take the risk and make enough backups along the way)

I hate apple for taking out the 17 inch mbp as i had the 2011 model as i prefer a bigger screen, but i'm sure this one is going to make me forget my old one instantly. i want it to load huge kontakt libraries more fast and just have the extra power and make music nice and comfortable, what do you think of this system?
I just wanna have good to excellent stuff in my home setup, some say it's a little bit overkill, would you guys say that too? i mean i 'only' pay 1100 euro more to get this monster as the insurance pays the rest.

    your opinions please *yes*

I use an MSI gaming laptop with 3rd gen i7,nvidia gtx680m,32Gb 1600 ddr3 and dual drives on a pc platform.mine also has raid/turbo and want to tell you that you are wasting your time/money with 2 ssd's in raid as the performance will only be marginally better than 1 ssd in non raid.i went with a 120gb ssd and a 1tb standard drive for my libraries and it kicks ass for music production and gaming alike.i run my laptop through a 40 in led tv via hdmi also.so....save some money and do a smaller ssd and large 1tb standard drive and you will get the most out of your laptop.

You're wasting 1,100€... but maybe you're rich enough to not care. It's just one year salary in Cambodia

why would you say i'm wasting it? i mean it serves a good purpose right? make music on a reliable, fast computer. i think of that as a good thing, and it's maybe 2 year salary's from where i'm originally from, which is the moluccas (indonesia). you can't possibly live like that calculating back and forth everytime your in the supermarket or where ever :bleh:

i read that it will be a lot faster, i must say i read this on the OCW site itself, so maybe they make things a little bit more nice than it is. but what is a marginally better performance? how come? i don't get it, how can you be (almost) as fast as 2 ssd's with one normal and 1 ssd? please explain... *yes*

You will be limited by the speed of your hard drive controller.for example if you put an SATA 3 ssd drive in a laptop that maxes at SATA 2 then you will only read at SATA 2 speeds regardless of how many raided SATA 3 drives you have.i ran my laptop with 2 raided ssd's already and the difference was marginal as in 50mb's per second.not enough to make any noticeable difference in performance to warrant the sacrifice on space i need for my samples.if you want to believe the hype and run 2 raided ssd's to feel like it performs better that is your choice but the reality is that you will not be running 2 times faster.raid is really designed for standard drives and in that realm there is a performance increase.again....1 ssd will beat 4 raided standard drives.i suggest you read more before blowing your money.

Actually, I can... and I do. *yes*

My point is that you don't neeeeed a new computer. You just desperately want one, which is fine but sad because it will not make you do better music, as having the last iShitphone5 will not make you call better friends...

    That's "Tittytainment".

no doubt, thanks for your input, this really made me think, i can use the money for different stuff, like a big ass 'normal' drive to store all my audioz 'garbage' nah i'm just kidding, but i see what you mean man.. so basically i'm thinking right now, fuck that 50 mb per second, and just go with one. aren't there ways to make those 2 ssd's run in a ultra fast way besides the obvious raid stuff? i'm not really in my good territory here, but i'm just asking you know, maybe you know some way... i guess the hd controller is 'glued' on the motherboard? so you can't change nothing right? thanks again!

i think you really underestimate the conscious way i'm living, i come here to ask for advice and i get better insights now, but as you read, i get a new one from insurance, so why not max it out? i'm not one of those types you think man.. but my laptop got stolen and you tell me i don't need a new computer? well that's strange pal... i don't get your 2 posts.. please elaborate some more on this...

    Yes, that's what I'm saying.

You don't... and you know that.

I don't think you're different from other people, you need to drink, to eat and to sleep.

That I understand, today's people never tells the truth to each other, they just entertain themselves politely in the same BS (yes, I've read your signature and I agree with it).
No offense, really, I just took the red pill a long time ago... what am I supposed to say ? Lie ?

To share something personal, one or two times a week I'm upset with my laptop which I find too slow, so I freeze track back and forth... so annoying.
What should I do ? Buy a new one ? Or try to find a solution to sound better with less stuff ?
I never take the easy way, I think that's the wrong way...

Hope you get me now, nothing personal, ATEOTD I'm just trying to help.

Why a laptop? They're more expensive/less powerful, tough to upgrade, etc.

Get a desktop, and with the extra dough you want to spend buy a netbook, or something?

i could only choose apple products with my insurance, i don't know if apple has a netbook? what is the diff between a netbook and laptop?
anyway, if i have 4000 euro to spend on apple shit, what would you advice? a mac pro tower? plus the €1000 euro external screen fucks my budget up, i would rather get 16 gb ram and 2 ssd's for the price. anyway, suggestions are still welcome

Can you install apple os on one of these? http://www.novatech.co.uk/laptop/range/novatechnfinityn1408.html I like the idea of having a SSD drive alongside a normal one. Would prefer an I7 chip though, cheers .

You can't do RAID even if you replace the optical drive with a hard drive.

The optical drive can only be replaced by a standard drive, not a SSD.

    Be carefull.

I have the same computer, it's a bomb you wont't regret it !

Just use the SSD for the system drive and buy a standard one for the data.

i have never heard producers like armin van burren, tiesto, and top ones boast about overdone computer systems, why? well how about in future spend 1,100 euro towards a label or i mean really u want too many things, all cost too much and u ask me for $10 nexus expansions? I could buy and buy but the cost of life is increasing. :(

If you search over at the Hackintosh forum , you find that people buy parts from them quite a lot. But there's no mention of an nFinity build, so far. Might work, but don't buy it for the sole purpose of building a Hackintosh unless you can easily swap parts like the graphic card in it.

I'm not van buren et al but I've become more and more minimal over the years. So much so that I think my next computer will be a Hackintosh still running Snow Leopard. No need to keep updating all the time. I'm more and more convinced, that you have to limit yourself to be productive. If you tell that to new producers they usually look at you as if you're crazy. But less is more, is the less is the right sort of gear. On the other hand, Amsterdam Pirate gets money back from the insurance, so he might as well go down the steroid route. *yes*
