What is your favourite analog simulation software/technology (vote)

Discussion in 'Software' started by ia, May 27, 2017.

?

What is best sounding technology?

  1. SPICE-based simulations (UAD, Waves (AFAIK Waves then appr their models), I can't remember more)

  2. Math models (approximations/signal-based) (D16, TAL, AIR, Arturia, Roland, NI, PSP, FF, etc)

  3. Modified Nodal Analysis (U-he stuff, Cytomic?)

  4. Volterra Kernels/Convolution (AA)

  5. Additive/spectral modeling (in some whie papers) (signal-based)

  6. Sampling (IK Multimedia, Kontakt-based, Omnisphere)

  7. AI (in theory)

  8. Wavetables? (but for me they sound very digital and lifeless)

Did you just change the subject of this thread so i'am looking now like an idiot who didn't get the subject? Or am i this idiot and didn't see you asked for technology instead of software? :dunno:

Btw. i can't help you: My favorite technology is the one wich sounds good to MY ears and feelings, wich doesn't need to much diskspace and plugin delay time. And the feeling of the gui handling is also importand. I don't like software with long loading times or lazy reactions. Maybe someone can sum up my preferences and correlate it to one of the technologies above. (Toneboosters, Stillwell are favorite producers) Thank you.:)

Yes, I just spicified the subject

I just want to know software you find most useful, practical and great sounding and then understand how to make something like that using available technologies.

You can list your favourite plugins, and maybe I will understand why you like it

ok, sampling and Volterra aren't your choice

Maybe math models is your cup of tea, they at the middle between simulation and CPU/RAM saving

I think about same things. I will create the thread about GUI and optimization technologies when I will be ready to make plugins

I will ask you about your fav GUI designs and why you like it

That's why I'm asking you guys! Thank you for your answers!

Sorry but I wonder how one can answer your poll seriously without knowing where exactly you want to go.
You seem to ask us how to do it before you even know *what* you want to do.
BTW, it seems you've mixed up sound generation with sound processing.
My only answer is: All of the above can sound good if done right!

I want to start from analog oscs simulations, and creating modules step by step

Always judge by your ears. And take your time to do so.
The fact that a few great, "analog" and "warm" sounding effects and instruments have existed for a long time tells me that you don't always have to use the latest DSP trick to achieve great sound.
But of course DSP *does* matter, and you'll find tons of information about the subject, there are many scientific papers also, but still you won't be able to hear the sound before you've built something.
It's a tedious and time-consuming process (ask Urs Heckmann from U-he!), but I really wish you good luck!

    Uhhhhm…

Basically, if you want people to chose from a list of Audio DSP technologies shouldn't you at least explain which does what and what the supposed pro's and cons are? I've been producing Music since 95 and I don't even know this shit, because I produce. I know what the difference of a convolution based emulation vs a programmed algorithm is but that's about it.

But here are some tips: decide how many instances could be run (is it for mixing or mastering; CPU Hog yes/no?) and how good it sounds. And that's about it in my mind :D

@ia, I recommend editing the first post to include that you're planning on developing plugins, and are using the poll to decide which emulation/processing methodology to use for development. It wasn't clear to me until I read through the entire thread.
Also, some here likely aren't aware of which processing type their favorite plugs use, so perhaps a little more detail/examples would help the accuracy of the poll results.
Interesting idea to poll for this. I'm interested to see the results. I'd like to develop plugins myself, but find the learning curve rather steep for myself.

I'm not sure how this will turn out, but I do dream of Harrison Mixbus + Nebula Pro. I pick that two as my favorite. I've seen how CLA works in studio in one of his Mix with The Masters videos, I'm inspired and gotten ideas from those.

I like SPICE since they are analog and can use very low CPU usage. (Eg: DMG TrackComp).
I like klanghelm, Toneboosters, FabFilters, DMG Audio..

    I like "packages"
    of analog plugins.

waves , slate, uad, tone boosters. etc.

i use them to each do a tiny bit to the tip of the transient, then stack them to be able to shape tone more like analog does. ( basically using them for what they do to the sound, not the picture on the plugin) It gives you the ability to create the sound to be whatever you want similar to sound design principles , but for sound shaping.
you build up a harmonic foundation where the transients are the same width, thickness from 0hz to 20kz, it levels it out, but sounding natural. it also allows you to be have more dimension in the sound and the transients sound natural instead of slamming say a single compressor or limiter.
