USB gamepad pretty cheap, can be configured to automate midi cc too..

If you have Android phone, some apps are made to control midi cc.. with knobs and fader..

I didn't even know I needed the Griffin until it was mentioned here. Just bought one.

 

This is what I use

 

akai midimix, novation launch control xl (black eiditon ) , or allen & heath xone k2 ( i have 2 of these.love them.,but use them for live mixing/djing.)

livid ds1 was nice,but overpriced and discontinued. behringer has some cheap ones too, not sure their build quality but they seem ok.

 

how does this mouse over thing work, does it learn and stick or only while the mouse is over a control?

 

Allen & Heath Qu32 is my control surface plus it's a 32 channel mixer.

 

What does that have to do with anything?
