now this is not a great tune, but i really like the way the basskicks/808's sound. i know you can layer 2 kicks, one 808 and then aanother kick to top it of, so it's not only a "whoom" but a "boom", but does that 'top' kick also needs to be pitched exactly as the 808 pattern? these sometimes go from e.g. A3 to A4 for that signature 'octave up jump', but if i pitch it the same as the 808 it sounds horrible on the higher parts as the kick will sound like a baby fist :(

how do you process your 808's???

the first high frequency kick is mostly not pitched and played in the same key

the 808 bass kick is always working as bass in a different pitch played as bass

sometimes the high frequency and 808 bass kick are played in key, sometimes not play in a key

aah very good to start this subject as well, i've just learned about things being in phase, it's somewhat clear what it is. it's certainly not good, but how to battle this phase cancelation? how to maintain that in big mix?

what are your methods on keeping things in phase, especially drums?

Phase is lineing up the wave forms (shapes the sound waves make). You can dissable the DAW's beat grid/click track and drag into place.

The only time Phase is an issue most the time is if its canseling out. 2 sounds go in the mixer, no sound comes out.
For your Drum your wanting it to add, therefore make it double up the wave in places.

Cancel out - wave forms are doing opposite things. one rise when the other falls.
construc/add - wave forms are doing the same. Rise together fall together

I just invert it when it cancels out and otherwise don't worry about it.
but that is just me and I'm not chargeing money for what I do

what about sub bass, i.e., how do you keep the subs from quieting the rest of the mix?

I play about for a long time with volumes and eq. I'm not pro. I just thought I'd sum up phase quickely and simpley as I could.

I studdied Physics and electronical engeneering.
Look for a pro sound engineer or do as I do play with it till it works. after a few trys you get the idea on whats needed for what you do.

I DJ so I just do personal remixes and my brothers band and his friends band, none of wich need perfect phase syncroniseation as long as they aren't canceling out.

I guess a high pass filter at around 15 to 30Hz to remove what you can't hear. that normally gives some space.

Is that more what you where after?

well you mite have it up to loud depending on your studio monitors and your room you would be surprised at how low you can have it in your Mix and it can still be bumping in a car or bigger sound system some times i cant hear the 808 sub bass that much when i'm siting in-front of my KRK ROCKIT 8's but i know my Room were my sweet spot is and when i want to check my Mix i go and stand there and i can get a true reference on my Mix hope it helps
