"sooner or later" is the thing here. For audio I guess I'll keep 7 even on my next build - but that's mostly due to the fact that I'll stick with Studio One anyway and 3 already has everything I could ever ask for so a theoretical v4 that only runs on 8.1 or 10 would need miraculous features to force a switch. Switching DAWs would need an even larger advance in workflow and features...and I don't see that happening in the audio business...

Should add: have 10 running on a laptop and it's just so f***ing annoying altogether ...

some new processors only support win10.. hardware support for win7 is coming to an end...
so upgrading sounds like a better choice, unless you want to stay with older hardware.

I'm on Win 10 at the moment, but only because my Wificard creates Audiodropouts under Win 7. On Win 10 my Wificard runs smooth, because of the better Audio Mixer/Seperatation. But I Like Win 7 more, its the more familiar Windows for me like i know it, i have less problems with Plugin Compatibility! Win 10 still Sucks in a certain way.

I'm currently wrestling this dilemma. I'm preparing to do a mobo/cpu/mem upgrade. (Meaning the upgrade has been funded ) If I go with an i7 7700K, I'm forced into Windows 10. If I go with a 6700K, I can keep my trusty old Windows 7.
Other things I'll have to worry about. Will my older MOTU 424 PCI be able to be fit? These newer motherboards don't seem to have PCI slots.
Funny thing is, at this point I figured there would be substantial difference in price for the generation 6 chip vs the generation 7 one, but they are really pretty close in price. The purchase of the Windows 10 license of course would be an added expense.

Windows OS is just a helpful tool to make music with. Windows 7 currently supports enough DAWs, plugins and audio apps to last several lifetimes, so why would anybody obsess with having the latest and absolutely not greatest MS OS is beyond me. The only reason to use W10 is maybe Internet, if you use Internet in Windows which is in itself rather daft.

If I had to use anything else for music production, I would rather use OSX or Linux than W10. W10 is a complete POS OS: https://www.networkworld.com/articl...-privacy-spyware-settings-user-agreement.html

Windows 7 not supporting newer processors is a hoax. Just another one created by Microsoft to force as much of the gullible and daft folks to install W10 as possible: https://hothardware.com/news/amd-ryzen-might-officially-support-windows-7-unlike-intels-kaby-lake and https://hothardware.com/news/microsoft-to-optimize-windows-10-for-kaby-lake-and-zen

Let me just remind you that all these CPU throttling "tech" is not good for audio processing and it should be turned off if you like to utilise your CPU fully and without crackling in audio. So for an audio optimised workstation PC Windows 7 should work perfectly with any CPU.

I would go with i7 7700 or even better AMD 1800X and install Windows 7 on it.
Regarding lack of PCI slots on newer motherboards, you could try one of those nifty PCI express to PCI adapters?

I have already migrated to MacOS(X) El Capitan, exact same hardware, my workstation is a rock-solid hackintosh now,
it was a bit annoying to move from Sonar to Reaper but it was well worth it, although entire "transition" from Win7+Sonar to ElCapitan+Reaper took almost a year for me...

since when does 7700k need windows 10 ?
anyway, 1700x is the way to go and win 10 is decent :)
im very disappointed as an Intel fanboy, but i have to admit that Intel got completely ripped by AMD now

Steinberg Dorico may be the first "DAW" to require Windows 10. I can't imagine them doing that to Cubase any time soon though. The real test will be in 2020 when Windows 7 support ends, and Windows 8.x (at that time) probably won't have enough of an install base to matter.

I had looked at those too, but am trying to go with the higher clock speed. My understanding is everything gets tied to that one core anyways as audio processing is serial in nature. I've determined that to be the case with what I'm currently running. Whenever I get audio crackles, I look at the cpu resources and it always show 1 core maxed at 100% and the others barely hitting 50%. I slightly overclocked my current setup (AMD Phenom II) and it enabled me to run a few more instances of Nebula/Gold, etc.
My main goal is to get away from having to bounce any bus send processing I'm doing, and still be able to have at least one (more would be nice) unfrozen track that I'm currently working with. Two would be nice for when I'm working with eq'ing out conflicting frequencies between tracks.
Of course, this is only my understanding of it. Any reasons you could give as to why you would prefer that architecture would be very helpful. :mates:
Thank you, thank you, thank you for these links. This makes much more sense to me than the other articles I had read about this.

Yeah, agreed. Looking hard at the 7700K now. It's a ~7% performance boost over the 6700K (in terms of regular clock speed). I think just a tad more future proof too. I'll also be extending the RAM from 8GB to 16GB. My projects in Sonar typically eat around 7GB. I think the system itself eats around 1-1.5GB so I'm sure there is some swap file usage going on there.
Yay, I'm happy about my upgrade plans again! Thanks for that!
I really need to open the box and take a closer look at that MOTU 424 card. I may just have the PCIe one, just need to double check to be sure. If not, I suppose I'll try the adapter. Mounting the card will likely be fun if I have to go that route.

Windows 10 here. Best OS version in the history of windows. I don't give a flying crap about MS spying my preferences. Nobody got time for that. I rather enjoy TB3 , 7700K, latest mobos, graphic cards and speed drives than moan about free updates.

    Music > everything else
