I know it's written in B but I don't know if it's written in the Arabic scale because the melody has an a in it which is not in the scale. Is it maybe in arabic and just borrowing from another scale for the melody? I'm a little confused,

B Phrygian Major - 5th mode of Harmonic Minor

    B C D# E F# G A

to make it even more Arabian sounding, change the A to A# = Byzantine

First i thought it might be Phrygian but after picking up my guitar and confirming a major 3rd from the root, I concluded it had to be a Phrygian major. Because of the rare interval of a step and a half, or a minor third, from the 2nd note to the 3rd of this scale, I knew it was a mode of Harmonic Minor so I googled it and found that the 5th mode fit the intervals.

Just like learning a language it is not done over-night.
I practiced scales and modes for years.

Here's a cool thread for identifying modes.

Modes are for mathematicians more than musicians...

@Moogerfooger , you're right ... that's why i've put this video ...satch talking about modes as atmosphères , sadness or hapiness and it helped me to identify them :winker:

@rudolph Oh look a neg mark lol... Go ahead and continue studying your modes. Not that I dont know them. They simply dont offer a way to move between chords in a free fashion. Honestly, learning changes to a tune & then matching associated modes to each chord is more work than necessary. But you aint hearing that.

The different scales are different paint palettes.
Modes are mathematics for some people, but inescapable to learn to make coherent and nice music .

I just use western major and minor scales but I should try others modes, that could be interesting...
