I like that you are getting into the nuances of making bass tracks. I actually really love synth bass and the tweakabilty of midi, and I agree that you can come up with 100% original bass lines this way. I haven't been playing bass guitar for very long, but it's a great expressive/percussive instrument and it's getting much more attention than my other guitars right now. So for me it's all about choosing the right tools for the job, and I'm actually looking for a MIDI to CV converter, so that I can get the most use out of an old Korg MS-20 that somebody gave me.

Incidentally, I am currently playing around with dual bass parts at the moment, but that's another story!

PS I also use samples, VSTi, Maschine, Kontakt libraries, etc, ... anything that I can get hold of really that can be used creatively, I'd even give Band In A Box a go :)

I've actually owned a couple of entry-level basses in my day and always felt guilty that I never had the time to sit down and learn how to play them. Ever consider getting a Roland GK-3B (or comparable) MIDI pickup for your bass guitar? You'd have a lot of different uses for it, obviously, but a major one would be recording MIDI and actual bass guitar simultaneously (or triggering a bass synth while also playing bass guitar and recording both sources as audio).

Your answer is....Band in a Box - Real Tracks. Just Check your Tempo, Pick your Style, Enter your Chords with Stops And Holds.

Then generate a wave file, played by a pro, ready to drag into your DAW of choice. It is so much like recording with real players.

Works great for many other instruments. Only drawback is disk space for many Real Tracks, and reproducing specific riffs.
