Hi! I've tried to listen from different sources a track called 'Enough is Enough' by Avicii, and it seems like every single version is crushed like if you put a limiter on the master with +10db, so I wanted to know if this track was released like this, without that much dynamic range.

Different videos (one is even 'live') but always that crushingness

    Thanks!

Yes, it is officially badly mixed like this.

Too much sub on the kick, too much sidechain pumping to hide that bad kick stealing energy, too much crushed high freqs due to sub/sidechain effect on master bus dynamic...
To me, it is a blend of bad mixing AND bad mastering (if throwing anything on a master bus can be called "mastering").

All what is needed to get a sound disaster

oh wow, this tracks needs some serious multiband compression :)
this is probably how 99% of the music sounds from these so called dj/producers before they send it to their mixing/mastering engineers and ghost producers. I once had contact with a dj/producer who had a few super famous songs in the last two years and he didn`t even know what a gate effect was.. :)

Complete crap and whoever produced it should have burn. 3dB over the peak so it's basically digital distortion shit.

@Ceja Correction : this track NEEDED multiband compression
Now it is too late to recover anything : master bus squashed to death. RIP :shalom:

About dj/ghost and such, it was funny when Getta said he was def since he was young:rofl:
Saying that, he simply said EVERY track he released were ghost produced...

The song is not on beatport so I don't think is officially released. These being said, I hear lots of Revealed releases (Hardwell's label) with even more audible clipping than these versions so yes, it is very possible that final mixes to be released in this fashion. On the other hand, Calvin Harris used to have insane RMS on it's bigroom songs but the sound was very clean.

WTF, now I need some help.. seems I lost it!

I took a random top Beatport chart banger: Axwell /\ Ingrosso - More Than You Know

It's a lossless .wav file. The True Peak measuring gives me over 1.0 dBTP. (Tested on 2 DAWs, 2 meters). It is NOT the first time I notice this with releases, but I was like ok this one is fcked up. Well, it seems I'm measuring something the wrong way...

Didn't touch anything except that I put the dBTP warning/clip to 0 dB. Can please somebody explain what am I doing wrong. Tnx
The DAW (no matter which one) doesn't show clipping..

Edit: don't look at the LUFS. It's about -3.. but with waves I didn't let it measure correctly

@Matt777 I'm not sure what you mean? The reason to use a True Peak Meter is that a dBFS Meter as existing in DAWs doesn't catch intersample peaks. You just have spotted an issue with the mastering of the file that occurs when mixing/mastering based on dBFS (I'm sure all my works up until recently will have similar issues, though not tested)

True Peak, to make it short, shows you the peaks that will occur in the analog domain.

    Thanx @tulamide
Got the first part (we all know the intersample peak graph, so I will not go into that..) but from tech guys:

..a high-end DA converter has headroom to compensate, but cheap speakers just won't be able to.. so audio with 0 dBFS might distort in the analogue realm. (may not distort in studio, but can get clipped on cheap hi-fi...)

To make it short: do we give a sh*t about this when mastering for Beatport?
(and, if NOT, why do/would we need true peak limiters? ..and expensive meters?)

    Teach me pls

It doesn't matter for what platform you're aiming for. At one point people will need to listen to your music. Say they do so with headphones plugged to their smartphone. The headphones are the analog domain, Beatport is the digital domain. To get from the digital to the analog domain, a converter chip is used (DAC). Of course, such a chip is a cheap mass product in smartphones and it is very likely that there are plenty of peaks (sensed by the ears as distortion).

This is why there are always two recommendations: 1 for how to master regarding LUFS (differs), and one for True Peak (mostly -1 dBTP)
