There are few domains where stock plugs are usually average.

algo reverbs (because good algos take a LOT of time/money to sound good) are the main.
In this domain, there is no good freeware (to me). That would be the main buy

Almost EVERYTHING else can be freeware and give you better options than stock in some domain :

tdr-kotelnikov, Molot... for compressors, Lepou/TSE/Ignite Amps... for guitar, EQ http://bedroomproducersblog.com/201...o-best-free-parametric-equalizer-vst-plugins/
And more plugins on bedroomproducersblog i really like

Try them before buying anything

Ableton stock is pretty good for most purposes. Their filters are made by Cytomic and solid, the simple delays and eq8 are just fine.. stock compressor good enough for most non-colored tasks.. Getting suite gives you M4Live, and the convolution verb is great. I can get 90% done with stock on ableton. Outside of that, (not counting instruments), I have bought and rely on:
    1. Soundtoys
    2. Valhalla
    3. misc waves junk just because used to it.

scratching me head to come up with more I would really need... Klanghelm stuff is great... (obviously there are a lot of good devs...)... hmmm

You know, they did lots of the world's hits of the last decades using the stock EQ in Pro Tools... the thing is, it's not the EQ that sounds great. It's the ear that set it up. It's not about plugins being the best, it's about you using them to the best of your ability. Plugins won't do anything by themselves, you have to set them to do something

Studios making hits using Pro tools would also be using massive consoles with hardware that costs more than most sports cars. Of course it is self evident that if you can't use Lives built in compressor you won't do much better with a third party like UAD'S Fairchild, but you can be assured the Fairchild in the right hands is going to be a better tool. There are good reasons that a single specialist plug in may cost more than most DAWS. Companies like Eventide have a long history and the quality of their products reflect the time they have had in perfecting what they do. The likes of Apple, Steinberg or Avid don't have the means or interest in running a dedicated division dedicated to making reverb the way say, Exponential Audio does.

not at all. most of the hits you hear on the radio never kissed a real console, let alone a real fairchild...

Do you think the biggest selling artists of the last decades record in their bedrooms? You say "most of the hits".... this implies a majority. Are you talking about Beyonce? Rihanna? Taylor Swift? Katy Perry? Kanye or Kendrick Lamar? You're telling us that they never set foot in a major studio? Never sang into a Neumann U87? Never listened to their tracks through an SSL? You do know that there are some extraordinary studios all over the world don't you? Who do you think their clients are?

5 plugins that blow away Ableton Stock ones?
Well, Ableton is a great DAW, but it sucks when it's Stock plugins... The Glue Compressor is TOP, but all the other ones are not that good.

Yeah you can expand and better any vst included in Ableton. There isn't one that cannot be beaten, included the Glue (I prefer Sand).

Question is : is it always needed ? Do you always need equiliibrium for your basic eq task, altiverb for your verb, the drop for you filter, etc, etc ...
I have no answer to that, it depends of your choice and there isn't a "good" one, it's what work with you.
If OP wanna find out which plugin is the best in each category, he needs to test them and make his choice. No one ever agrees.

Most people underestimate the stockplugins of modern daws. I guess in the old days what you got as stock pugins was crap, just to get you started from the first day. But these time are over. You might need 3 stock plugins to replace one specialiced thing of another company, but you will most probably get there. for years now, if i find some really cool tool, i try to recreate it with stock tools. Most of the time it works. And come on guys, be honest, the eq you love most is the one with the gui you find most appealing. Implementing an eq isn't rocketscience.

Many eqs have prettier gui than equilibrium. Defo. None has all the curves and features that equilibrium offers. No stock plugin can offer that - and I use the latest version of all my daws - no matter how many I pile up. If i only need the stock eq of whatever of the 4 daws I'm working with which are all fine but basics (except the one in samplitude, which is more advanced), then Ill use the stock plugs. Other times they litteraly can't cut it, so I use the ones that do.
It's very hard to design quality eqs in the digital realm. Few companies manage to imo.
