Hello all, I've heard of somewhere there exist some timetables that already calculated the reverb times for certain bpm's, like those frequency to midi note sheets...

Can anyone help me find these or is it just a fairytale and am I not informed well?

I never heard of these timetables specifically for 'Reverbs', however these exist for 'Delays'. *yes*
Anyway, as 'Reverbs' are in fact a multitude of very short Delays, maybe you can use them in some way...

Here’s how to calculate millisecond delay time to your tempo so you can make adjustments on the fly (or just set it correctly for a hardline beat delineation.) Needless to say, if you’re not going for strict tempo beat pulses then you can skip equations and do this “by feel”.It’s very simple if you remember this equation:

* Delay time in ms (Milli-seconds) = 60000/BPM (Beat Per Minute)

Will give you a quarter note delay time.

OR

* Crotchet (Quarter note) timing in ms (Milli-seconds) = 60000/120 (BPM) = 500 ms

A millisecond is 1/1000th of a second, and tempo beats per minute (BPM) gives you an exact beat count per minute. (120BPM is 120 beats per minute.)

The above equation gives you the timing for every beat (i.e. the delay repeats will be synchronized with your beats).

The same thing in a musicians term will be as under :

* Delay time for crotchet in ms = 60000/BPM (Beat Per Minute)
* Delay time for Quaver in ms = 60000/BPM/2 (Beat Per Minute)
* Delay time for Semi-Quaver in ms = 60000/BPM/4 (Beat Per Minute)

Example :

Suppose your song tempo is 120 BPM, then the delay calculation is as follows:

* Crotchet (Quarter note) timing in ms (Milli-seconds) = 60000/120 (BPM) = 500 ms
* Quaver (Eighth note) timing is = 500 ms / 2 = 250 ms
* Semi-Quaver (Sixteenth note) timing is = 500 ms / 4 = 125 ms

Explanation :

BPM means beats per minute. So a tempo of 120 BPM means that the song is playing 120 beats per minute. Therefore 120 beats / 60 seconds = 2 beats per second. Since 1 second = 1000 Milli-seconds, hence if we divide 1 second (1000 Milli-seconds) by 2 Beats, we get 1/2 seconds ( 500 Milli-seconds) for every beat.

And if you want to get it instantly, here you can find a 'Delay Time Calculator'. Simply make your choice of 'BPM' or 'musical note divisions' (quarter, triolet, dot,... ) and you'll get the corresponding delay in 'ms'.

oh yes, you're right, thanks for pointing out my mistake, it is indeed delay what i need. (I pressed thanks twice, but it didn't work lol!)
great site you gave me too, it's so handy to know the formula's and to have it calculated for you, now i can focus more on music.. really dope!!

finally if you're still around.. every time i use reverb, my mixes tend to be kinda 'washed' in reverb, i find it difficult sometimes finding the right balance. i really want the reverb to be audible but not too much, any tips to achieve this? i'm also watching a reverb explained tutorial @ the moment, but the more tips the better

A Good Delay time calculator:

U can use in Reverbs for "predelay" or "tail"
Use a reverb not meant hear always a Cathedral (big reverb) sound... a reverb is for make "ambience / space" in sounds. Original sound with multiple reflections and/with a short tail time 0,5-1 sec aprox.

 

There is, in fact, a way we time reverb to the track, which is essential, by the way.

I downloaded the .png image and the filename was 'predelay', I guess that's what this image is about, right?
So just to clear it out, these calculations aren't to be applied to the 'main' reverb length, these apply to correctly apply predelay, right?
