My first microphone many years ago was a Shure SM48-LC (~$45). You get probably 90% of the sound of the SM58 for half the price. Since I sang a lot at the time I later upgraded to a MXL V63M condenser microphone (~$100) to better pick up the nuances of my voice. That microphone lasted me many years and countless recordings until I finally was able to afford to upgrade to mid-high tier equipment.

I had to try it on one of mine also. The 'transformerless 57 = 7b' hype a few years ago was too much to ignore.

A Shure SM48 is basically a SM58 without the transformer.
