I always hated Izotope Break Tweaker. So much so I deleted it.

 

What were they thinking?! Stutter Edit is not that much better.

 

Perhaps one of the most professionally used PLUGIN ever.

Professionals usually like boring gui. I wouldn't put Kontakt in a Top100 even. The developer Puremagnetik clearly think a lot of their "artwork" style GUIs. It makes me think of their plugins as a joke, to where i won't even demo them.

 

One of the worst if not the worst ever could be a looper gizmo called Circlys. If you like puke all over your desk this is the one to use. It's 29 bucks.

Problem with Kontakt is not the GUI is ugly, but the implementation..
Everything is too Small, too Hidden, or Mixed up.

It's great for direct use,
but if you need to go Inside and fiddle with the instrument internals, it's all too small and cramped..
Not professional, handy or clear enough, considering the Complexity, and what can be done with it.

As much as I love the old Ohm Force plugins I could never use their funky skins. At least they had a "classic" skin option. Can't get along with a couple of the Sugar Bytes plugins for the same reason which is unfortunate as they have a good sound. I guess my brain doesn't want to take processing power away from my ears to decipher a bunch of visual clutter when working. I also tend to prefer flatter interfaces with numerical displays over knobby emu's. I do like visual feedback in the form of envelopes, LFOs, spectral displays etc but not garish graphics that make me feel like I just dosed 1200 ug.

Yeah, Kontakt is stuck in a bad place. I believe the issue is that it's built on 20 year old code that is difficult to change without breaking functionality. There's literally parts of it that date back to v1.0. A huge industry relies on it working properly and any changes could affect third-party libraries rendering them unuseable, which is obviously unacceptable for working composers, plus considering the value of some of the libraries they would upset some major developers that rely on them. They are supposed to be attempting to change it a little at a time rather than a complete rewrite as that will almost certainly break it. It obviously isn't an easy job coz I think they would relish the advertising campaign for the "New Look Kontakt". They need to get a grip fast though or they'll lose the market. It's already slipping away with some companies, such as Spitfire, moving toward their own bespoke plugins.

 

I just saw an ad from them in the past few days that says "20 years of Komplete" like they are proud about it. This "without breaking" thing is some bullsh*t generally. " It's such great code written by blah blah, and so hard to code anything as good ever again!". Yeah, sure. It is because they do not want to spend the money.

 

I mainly agree. But since Kontakt v7 they're indeed slowly introducing big changes on both Kontakt and libs themselves GUI.
Those compatibility problems with old graphics cards it's because they've moved to the latest Qt library at least for the GUI. Qt is the best general-purpose C++ cross-platform GUI library.
I've seen digging into nkr files vector images (freely resizable) and so on. They're still very green so the only libs slowly implementing them are NI's. Like the Strezov-based new choir library.

Problem is: they're doing it fuckingly slow. On the.. ahem.. bright side: hey, good thing they managed to make a vst3 version only 12 years later vst3 came out.

No, this GUI is fine. Not great, but ok. There are some choices regarding color and contrast that I definitely wouldn't have made that way, but it's readable. All elements are very easy to reach.

 

It's the spinning and spinning and spinning. It makes me seasick.
